Rescue Decks

Rescue Decks are ideal for farms which have a high number of live born piglets and want to improve their health.

A Rescue Deck is a box in the farrowing room in which surplus piglets that would normally die can be reared in a system that allows them to stay in the same department (all in - all out).

The advantages of this system are significant:

¨ It provides a microclimate and high hygiene.

¨ Since the piglets are used to solid feed before weaning, there is no post-weaning dip.

¨ This results in a reduced mortality and more uniform piglets in the nursery.

¨ It reduces the need for non-productive foster sows, and hence the need for relatively expensive farrowing crates, while raising farrowing rates.

Rescue Decks are designed for use with piglets that are 3 days or older, and have had the opportunity to drink colostrum.  Some farms choose to use the laggards; others chose to select the smallest piglets.  However, it is not advised to add piglets at a later stage, as these will have different intestinal micro flora which will increase the risk of diarrhoea.

The size of a Rescue Deck is as follows:

Height:          54 cm

Top:               140 cm  x   90 cm

Bottom:         136 cm  x   83 cm

Assuming there is 1 surplus piglet per sow, it is recommended that 1 Rescue Deck per 10-12 sows is used.

Rescue Decks should be placed on the separation between the crates in the farrowing department. The mixer should be placed in the central corridor, with the plumbing so routed through the department so that you can start with 1 Deck and expand later when needed.

Rescue Deck Feeding Formulation

Success in rearing piglets in a Rescue Deck is ensured by using Rescue Milk, Heavy Pig 1 and Mastercreep 1.

Rescue Milk is specially developed for piglets in Rescue Decks and is a unique combination of:

¨ Long shelf life (acidified).

¨ Homogeneous in solution (selection and processing of raw materials).

¨ Good preparation for the digestion of solid feeds (highly digestible protein sources like Provisoy).
