Young Musicians hit right note with punters

From the the Paisley Daily Express, Friday 5th May 2006, you can visit their site here

Punters at a Renfrewshire bookmakers had that winning feeling as they gave their support to a special event which coined in cash for talented young musicians.  Visitors to the Ladbrokes shop in Linwood took part in a Scottish theme day, with manager Alison Lamont laying on shortbread snacks and other treats.

The event was staged to raise funds for the Johnstone Pipe Band and musical entertainment was provided by Alison's 15 year old son Stuart, who is a member of the group's new junior section, along with his pal Sean Cumine, 15, and Pipe Sergeant Alan McGeoch.  A number of raffles were held during the day, which raised a total of £75 for the band.  This cash will go towards the cost of kitting out the younger members in smart Highland dress.

Alison said: "The afternoon went very well and the shop was much busier than usual.  We were pleased to raise £75 in just a few hours."  Bosses at Ladbrokes also gave the pipe band a free £50 bet but, sadly for them, their luck was out.  Alison added: "The band were delighted to try their luck with a free bet but, unfortunately, they didn't pick a winner."

Sponsorship
The Bands funds have been boosted thanks to another years sponsorship from BAA, although it has been scaled down from previous years.  As usual the band will be playing at the Youth Games in Scotstoun and the Airports Fun day.

The Adult Band has also been awarded £2700 from the lottery while we're still waiting to find out about the Novice bands application.

Ceilidh Update
The overall profit from the Ceilidh was £1600 so well done to everyone involved.

The band would like to thank the non-members who helped with the sandwiches, all the dancers who took part and of course Donnie and John.  The Next Ceilidh has already been planned for the 2nd of September.

Frankie Miller Tribute Recording
The band took part in the recording of a tribute CD to the legendary Glasgow born blues singer who is fighting his way back to health after a devastating brain haemorrhage in 1994. The band's contribution to the CD was to perform during a recording of the song 'Caledonia' on which the lead vocals were performed by Fish. Frankie and his partner Annette were there during the recording and it was a pleasure meeting them, and also working with everyone else in the studio. The band would like to wish everyone involved in the Frankie Miller Tribute the best of luck to its success.

The band's session went very well and the CD will be released to coincide with the tribute concert on 7th September - see below. Many thanks to all who took part in the recording.

The band took part in the tribute concert at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow on Saturday 7th September. This entailed performing during a stage change and joining everyone on stage for the Caledonia finale which finally took place at 2:15am! Backstage passes were available for all band members which gave us the chance to rub shoulders with many of the other artists including the main man himself, Frankie Miller.  Click here for photos.

Web Awards 2000 Website of the Year
Viewers of Bob Dunsire's Bagpipe Web Directory nominated the JPB site for 'Web Site of the Week' in May 2000 and  the site later went on to win 'Web Site of the Year' putting it into Bob's Hall of Fame for the year 2000.
Here's what Bob had to say about our site:
"Even with my slow Internet connection this is a great web site, and worth the wait. This Scottish Grade 3 band's web site has nearly all the 'special effects' you'll find in any piping site (frames, mouseover, thumbnails), and they are well done indeed. Excellent graphics and all sorts of information".
