DIY Suunto Vyper Interface. |

When I first saw the software for the Vyper I was suitably impressed and looked into purchasing an interface. What did not impress me was the price they were asking for the interface which on the surface (no pun intended) seemed to be a relatively simple piece of equipment. (What a surprise?!) So I looked into what was required to make one. I stumbled across a design by Steve prentice and with the very limited knowledge of electronics that I possess and a little help from a colleague set about building an interface from the circuit on Steve's site, but adapted for vero board. (thanks to Ray 'tonka' Thomas) MK1 was constructed, trimmed to get the correct voltages and worked the first time I plugged it in! Not happy with the simple box enclosure I used for MK1 I set about developing a design for a desktop interface that was intended to be easy to use and a little more pleasing to the eye. The design was progressed utilizing foam block models as well as more conventional methods (sketching And CAD modelling). This ensured that the end product was proportionally correct and held the Vyper Firmly in place while transferring data. The contact interface uses 2 gold plated spring loaded test bed pins. The pins have a concave head and the travel is about 4-5 mm with a small force required to compress them. They work exceptionally well. Encouraged by the outcome I am about to embark on a few more projects-I Will post these on this site when they have been developed. The following is an example of the logbook print out you can get for each dive with the software (downloadable from Suunto) , Sorry about the resolution-it's the best I could do for now. Good luck! |
