Cardiff International Airport (freeware)

created by Terry Shields

There are many talented people in the world of flight simulation, chief amongst these are the third party developers. Some like Aerosoft and Just Flight have large teams of programmers and coders beavering away to produce payware products for our enjoyment.

Once in a while someone comes along who develops scenery just for the fun of it, many do this as away of extending their own hobby and creating something just for themselves. One such person is Terry Shields, an extremely talented individual who tells me he has only just started learning about scenery design recently.

Terry has produced a large amount of work already but by far his most ambitious project to date is probably EGFF. Which by the way is freeware. I have personally been waiting for a decent Cardiff for for some time. I even had a stab at creating it myself but my talents lie elsewhere.

So using the FSX SDK's, GMAX and an assortment of other tools Terry has created Cardiff Airport and the surrounding environs to an outstanding high degree. Some have even said that it rivals some of the payware add on airfields on the market. It certainly compares with if not better than The UK2000 Airport by Gary Summons (payware)

The detail is staggering and one addition that really brings the airport alive is the road traffic that is on the perimeter rd. When your on final to runway 30 and you see the cars and trucks going back and forward at the end of the runway is breathtaking. The level of detail just keeps piling up as you wander around the airport from baggage vehicles to piles of cargo. take a low flight over the viaduct at Porthkerry park and you will see birds rising from the trees. One of the really neat effects is when you call for push back and a push back tractor attaches to the plane and pushes you back. Very nice touch indeed.

Terry has even created parking and stop signs as you roll towards your stand. The BA Maintenance Hangar is a work of art especially the exposed roof trusses.

Terry has done this with the aid of sources on the internet and just a few photographs, and what he has achieved is simply stunning, as you can see from the screenshots below.

Furthermore since release Terry has made some revisions suggested by myself and Dave Birch, revisions that he made within hours or at the most a couple of days. Terry has a great future and to be honest if he had asked for some money for this airport I think I might have paid it. He will certainly get a couple of beers off me.

EGFF can be downloaded from www.avsim.com in the FSX library, I recommend you download it now. Did I say it's freeware.
