Sqn Ldr O W Alderson AFC QC RAF (Retd)

The story of a gentleman RAF pilot. Ollie Alderson is a member of the Bristol Flight Simulator Users Group, as an ex BA and RAF pilot his personal story is both at times amusing and fascinating, enjoy the read, I did.

My Flight Simulator Hanger

In a recent online forum someone asked what was the best payware aircraft, I did this quick reply in relation to my simulator setups, both FS9 and FSX. The aircraft I have in no particular order are:

LVLD767 FS2004 and LVLD767 FSX,
PMDG737 FS2004,
PMDG 747 FS2004,
PIC 737 FSX
PIC777 FSX.

LVLD 767 (2004,FSX)

Is a superb replication of the real world aircraft and I find something new in the systems each time I fly it. 100% rock solid well worth the money. Flies like a dream although can mess up descent profiles by going overspeed, you have to keep an eye on it. If you have the 2004 version and then buy the FSX version you get a really decent discount.

PMDG737 FS2004,
Flawless, cant say much more brilliant. So forgiving if you mess up, and if you screw up your FMC or flightplan it almost flies like a cessna when hand flown, Superb

PMDG 747 FS2004,
I really like this although still only scrtaching the surface of this super sim. That said I don't like the colour of the main 2d panel.

PIC 737 FSX
This is a recent purchase and I have to say I am very impressed some people don'y like the PIC (Feelthere) products, but now that Navigraph have finally sorted out the airacs and sid/star issue this aircraft is a real worthwhile addtion to the FSX hanger.

PIC777 FSX
This was one of the first aircraft to be produced for FSX and had a few bugs and there where some issues with airacs and SID/STARS but once again the bugs are being sorted and NAvigraph have the airacs and sid/stars sorted so slowly this behometh is becoming an asset in FSX.

So there you have a very quick review of my Boeing hanger across F2004 and FSX.

Service Pack 1

SP1 is out and some people have had no end of trouble with it. This is mostly because there was a bug included on release which messed up the fs registry in both FSX and FS9 the Aces team quickly identified the problem and placed a fix on the site within hours. That said a lot of people where in a world of hurt and had to full reinstalls to rectify the problem. AVSIM has detailed reviews of SP1, I myself think it's had an amazing effect on my PC and FSX is even better than before.

VFR Gen X Photo Scenery

Christmas 2006 has been a bumper year for me in regards to FS related goodies. Along with the TRACK IR4 that I got I also received the full set of VFR Generation X Photo Scenery (Gen X).

VRC Pilot Client software for controllers developed by Ross Carlson. This amazing controllers software has been released by Ross Carlson, read my review on the ATC page, it's only myopinion but its worth a lot. Ross Carlson has released version two of this remarkable softwarevrc. Actually thats a misnomer what he released is version 1.1 but there are so many fixes and added features it might aswell be version two. I will in due course be doing a revised review but until such time if you still haven't got this fantastic radar client you must go and get it immediately.Click here www.metacraft.com/vrc and begin to experience both the wireframe 3d views and the new and revolutionary Tower 3d view using your FS9 installation to view the airport runways and taxiways just like a real tower controller

VATAWARE

VATAWARE is the latest piece of software to come our way from within the community and I have to say that Tim has done an outstanding job. Apparently, and Tim has confirmed this he only took two weeks to build the site, if that's the case I think Tim will be able to earn a good living at producing easy to read and navigate sites, for quite sometime to come. So what is VATAWARE, well its simple really its a data base of all flights conducted by all pilots on VATSIM and put together in a format that all of us can understand. This is truly innovative and from what started as a personal project has developed into one of the premier VATSIM community benifits.click here to see what it can do for you.

VAT-Spy

Well he's done it again, Ross Carlson has produced a programme for the flight simming community which I'm sure ATC and pilots alike will come to find invaluable. VAT-Spy is the latest incarnation of online information of the VATSIM world. Pilots,ATC, Country and airfield inofrmation is readily available with the click of the mouse.

There is so much I really dont know where to start to tell you about it all. Perhaps the simplest thing would be to just go to the site here http://www.metacraft.com/VATSpy/ and download.

Ross thank you once again for an outstanding piece of work, your contribution to the community is beyond measure.

Euroscope

Once again I am amazed at the dedication of the members of VATSIM. Many of whom devote there time, expertise, loss of friends wives and sanity for the good of the online simming community.

One such individual is Gergely Csernak who through sheer strength of will has developed another Radar client for use by controllers on VATSIM.

What Gergeluy has created is something that once again moves controlling into a totally new realm and makes "real as it gets" even more real. Euroscope is truly a masterpiece in the same way that Ross Carlsons VRC was and still ison release.

Euroscope is far to complex for me to go into any detail on these pages but the one thing I will comment on is the way that as a controller almost all aircraft commands can be made via the tag. The other revolutionary aspect of euroscope is the introduction of sectors under identifiable control. Once again difficult to explain but once seen in action is really quite startling. I can only suggets that you have a look and make up your own mind. Eurscope has been out for approx 6 months but after the release of an upgrade that makes it is easier to use I believe many controllers is Europe may just migrate over to it. Competition is good. Thank you Gergely and all your team of helpers and beta testers.

FSX- EGFF (Cardiff International) Scenery

FSX has been out for well over a year and only really now are we seeing addons being produced for it. One such addon is EGFF Cardiff International, which is freeware and created by Terry Shields. click here for a full review of this fantastic creation of EGFF.

SNAPPER

The number of times I have seen in the forums the question "How do you take snap shots in Flight Sim?" is unbelieveable. The solution is very simple press print screen but then after that it gets a little complicated because you have to the copy and paste into a photediting suite or Windows paint program etc.

It's all a bit tedious, although some can cope quite well with that process. Well recently I came across Snapper. Snapper has been developed by Michiel Overtoom and is Freeware.

As Michiel says on his site "Snapper makes it really easy to make screenshots. When Snapper is running, every time you press the 'PrintScreen' button, it will save a JPG image of the screenshot to your harddisk, possibly with some enhancements".

This is a brilliant application especially if like me you llike to take screen shots of your flights the good thing about Snapper is that you can keep pressing printscreen as many times as you like because Snapper places the images in a file for you, to come back to after you have finished your flight, you can get Snapper by clicking here. http://www.ovosoft.net/snapper/

The Great UK IFR Treasure Hunt

This event took place today, 17th June 2007 between 1500 zulu and 2100 zulu. The event was a fantastic success for all involved Cardiff was honoured to participate and have the opportunity to show that we can manage almost any level of traffic. My thanks to Dave Birch and our radar controller Alex Jefferies.

Have a look at our arrivals and departure board here

Track IR4 Pro simply one of the most interesting developments for flight simulator and the flight simmer to date. This amazing little piece of hardware and it is little, 1.7”, in length and accompanying software has revolutionised my VFR flying beyond imagination.

Cardiff International Airport released for FSX by Terry Shields Click here

FSX or just X as I have started calling it has finally arrived and many of us have bought the full deluxe version, even before we have built the machines that we thought we might need to run it. Surprisingly and I think this has caught many of us out, we don't actually need a monster of a machine to get an enjoyable flying experience.

My PC spec is
AMD Sempron 3000+ 2.2ghz
1 gigabyte Ram
nVidia 6600le

So quite measly some would say, but and this is the science behind X, it has been designed to work on a greater range of machines than ever before. This means a greater market for Microsoft. It has also been designed for the younger games player as well as the serious simmers like ourselves. The other major aspect of X is, that it has been optimised to give a smooth and jerky free flying experience at only 15fps. 15fps I here you all shout, thats not possible, well it is and it does. To read some techy stuff about it click here.So how does it fly, well on my machine really very well and I am very plesed with it indeed, there are some tweaks on the net already, go to Google and do a search for FSX tweaks, to find them. I achieve 25fps solid and consistently in all views external or otherwise. The most breathtaking thing I have seen, is the new VFR HD Photoscenery Gen X download of Snowdonia, North Wales. This is staggering and has no frame rate impact at all. The future's bright the future's X, and when I do build my new machine in the new year it wont be for VISTA and DIVX10 it'll be for X and I'll run WINDOWS XP, I say this because based on what I have seen already of X running on my spec at present, I'll be more than happy just to get a couple of Athlon 64's and a nice new PCI express card with 2gig of ram. I forgot to mention that when X installs it looks for three things on your PC to determine the spec of your machine, chip, ram, and graphics card, and that is it, no furry dice or lucky mascot on the top of the monitor, no sound card or mobo chipset, just chip, ram and card. So there you have it my quick and dirty review of FSX, or X as it shall be always known as from now on by me.
