WX Rosedale narrowly failed to open their season with a win against Sawbridgeworth II on Saturday.

Batting first, captain, Paul Fuller, soon got into his stride whilst fellow opener, Mark Dyer, who was playing in his first match after a broken leg, initially struggled to get to grips with the home bowling.  It was Fuller to fall first, however, only for Dyer to start finding his feet, posting partnerships of 42 and 71 with Jonny Patel (17) and Mark Gentle (40) before falling for 55.  The remaining batsmen provided some useful runs without any further major scores as the innings closed on 185 for 7.

For the Swabridgeworth innings, Rosedale opened the attack with spinners, Mark Gentle and Paras Patel and were soon rewarded with the wicket of opener Levey for only 1.  Swabridgeworth avoided any further early loss but found runs hard to come by as the score reached only 14 from the first 12 overs.  With two batsman set, the score then began to accelerate as Lloyd (46) and Gaylard (35) looked to be laying the foundations for a home victory.  The introduction of Prad Zala into the attack completely changed the face of the game, however, as both batsmen were removed in his first over which also saw the fall of number 5 , Fisher, for a duck.  Birch (34 no) provided some stability to the innings but, despite some attractive shots from his fellow batsmen, none could stay around long enough to provide a substantial partnership.   The ninth wicket fell in the penultimate over with Paul Fuller removing number 10 Edwards for 12 but Birch remained to see out the final over to secure the draw.  Prad Zala had some consolation as he finished the match with figures of 5 for 19 from his 9 overs.
