Reason 12 : "Macs are unstable and crash a lot"

Validity level: * - - - -

Anyone who suffers with their Mac being unstable, is either talking of one not of this centrury, has a potential hardware fault, or is really unlucky! Whatever the reason, their opinion is not to be taken as representative of the entire Macintosh platform.

Indeed, many people did experience a fair degree of crashing (when a computer's OS stops responding to user input) in older versions of Mac OS (Mac OS 9 and before). But all modern Macs now use an OS, called Mac OS X, that has its underpinnings based on the industry strength UNIX OS. This makes OS X very stable, and OS crashes to be very rare! Certainly as stable, and possibly even more so, than any other mainsteam OS we could mention.

What is a crash?

Just a couple of minor points to make: Do not misinterpret what an OS crash is. A non responsive resource or volume can cause any OS to become temporarily unresponsive, which is not necessarily a crash. Also applications can still crash or quit unexpectedly. This too is not an OS crash, unless the misbehaving application brings the whole OS down with it, which in the case of OS X, is extremely rare.
