Reasons why not to go Macintosh"You wanna get yourself a proper computer, mate!" - Computer 'experts' (sic) worldwide
Introduction
So you're thinking about buying a personal computer, are you? Well that's easy. While there are lots of brands and variety of models to choose from, whatever you end up with, the chances are, it will be one that comes pre-installed with the ubiquitous Microsoft Windows operating system. And why not indeed? It's unarguable that a significant portion of PCs sold, are to people whom computers are somewhat of an enigma. So usually, they will simply do what everyone else does. They will not consider, or reject the idea of choosing any PC that is not a Windows PC, often not fully aware there's even a choice. This immediately excludes the option of an Apple Macintosh instead. (See page "What is a Macintosh?" ) What we hope to achieve here is to question this decision by asking, "Should they be so hasty?" Mais pourquoi? Inspired as I was by reasons expressed by people who were at least aware of the Macintosh, but still decided to give it a miss in their computer buying decisions, in favour of a "proper" PC, I decided to put together this list of the most common reasons I'd heard for making that decision. Some of these reasons have some validity for some people in some circumstances, and not easily worked around. But others are long standing misconceptions, hearsay, of historic validity only, or outright myths just crying out to be debunked. The purpose here is not necessarily to advocate or belittle any platform overall, but to clarify the basis of these commonly expressed reasons, analyse their validity - or lack thereof - and if possible, to ascertain if a Macintosh could have been a viable choice. I hope that by learning from decisions made by others, your decisions will be informed ones. |
