No matter how bad or good a gardener you are there is always something new to learn or exciting to discover. I have included a list of some of the books I enjoy and find useful from time to time. This is by no means a definitive list of must have books, and what I have found to be useful you may not like. There are thousands more out there covering all subjects. Check this list out by all means but make up your own mind. The Royal Horticultural Society books are particularly good.


RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening, Christopher Brickell

An excellent book for beginner and expert alike covering all aspects of gardening including

• Planning, pruning, propagation
• Ornamental trees, perennials, water gardening, fruit and vegetables
• Greenhouse selection and equipping
• Laying paving, fencing, building a pergola
• Tools and equipment
• Water conservation and organic practises


RHS Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers, Christopher Brickell

Another must have for any serious gardener it includes

• A collection of over 8,000 plants with advice on cultivation and propagation.
• Includes advice on what will grow where.
• Plant catalogue including full colour pictures and descriptions.


RHS Plant Finder

If you can not find a particular plant this annual book listing more than 70,000 plants and where to find them is for you. It provides all the information you require, including
• Location maps for over 800 nurseries
• Correct botanical names, so you can choose the right plant every time.


RHS Garden Finder, Charles Quest-Ritson

If you like to look at gardens then this guide to Britain's best gardens is well worth the money. This book includes:

• Detailed information on over 1,000 gardens open to the public
• A-Z plant listings to help you choose the gardens with the best seasonal displays
• An index of over 100 gardens in the UK with free access for RHS members
• Full contact details including addresses, telephone and fax numbers, websites, opening hours, maps and facilities.


The Complete Book of Patio & Container Gardening, Robin Williams

A useful book to have on your shelf if you want to landscape your own garden but are not sure where to start. It includes:

• Planning and construction
• Decoration and planting design
• Plants, planting design, husbandry, and welfare
• Examples of patio gardens. Plant and construction materials.


The Pruning Specialist, David Squire

A guide to caring for shrubs, trees, climbers, hedges, conifers and small fruit trees.
An easy to follow guide which includes the all important when to prune.

This book is one of a series of books on different garden related subjects, look out for others that might be of interest.


The -------------- Expert, Dr. D. G. Hessayon

No list is complete without these books. You will see them in any DIY stores and many garden centres. They cover a multitude of subjects are easy to follow and very popular.
