I began Skim and Trim in 2005 when I realised there was a need for a friendly, reliable garden service that people could feel confident with. Both friends and family had problems over a period of time finding gardeners who would do the job satisfactorily without wasting time or finding excuses to disappear somewhere. I felt with my experience in gardening and my customer service skills built up over more than 30 years I could offer a service that the elderly in particular could feel safe with.
Allow me to introduce myself and give you some background.
My name is Paul Wragg, I am just on the wrong side of 50. I have been gardening since I was a child, helping my dad landscape and maintain a large garden. Over the years I have helped out in the gardens of family members during holidays and at weekends. My wife and I have owned 4 different properties over the years all with gardens that presented their own challenges. We have lived at our present address over 20 years. When we moved in the garden was completely overgrown. With 2 young children who needed a playing area it needed taming and quickly. Even so it took a while to clear the sight and prepare the ground to be seeded for a lawn.
The garden has not been designed, rather it has evolved as the family has grown and interests have developed. A greenhouse was added along with a fruit and vegetable area. As the family grew and entertaining friends increased the vegetable patch disappeared in favour of a second lawn with patio. (That area is beyond the shed and cannot be seen in the picture of our garden). The bottom of the garden is also the location of the pond (mark 3) which has increased in size again. We have plans to double the size of the pond from its current 1500 galls. This will be better able to accommodate the Koi we have been given. For more info on the pond, waterfall and home made filter system visit Pond Maintenance.
As my part time gardening expanded I decided to take the plunge and leave full time work to set up my own company, ‘Skim and Trim’ in April 2005 and quickly gained a good reputation.
I decided on the name Skim and Trim because two of the biggest jobs in the garden are:
The gardens I maintain range from small private and council owned properties up to half an acre landscaped gardens. Most of my customers are elderly, the larger gardens are owned by professional people who use there gardens for entertaining and networking. I find people generally choose to employ a gardener because:
Professionals in particular need the garden to be presentable at a moments
notice for networking or just a good party.
