The North

Windsurfing Locations : Gairloch, Wester Ross

This is a long way north but it's worth it. The best beach is at Sands, next to the camp site. There is a right of way at the south end of the beach, or you can park in the camp site for around one pound. The beach faces SSW so the best wind directions are W thru SE, SW is slightly sheltered by the small island offshore. Ideal for intermediates, I have not encountered large waves here. Although potentially good for beginners, there is not rescue cover.

In a N wind I have sailed at a beach just north of Inverasdale in Loch Ewe. Sizeable waves can build from this direction. This beach is probably ok for E wind as well. For NW wind I would try Gruinard Bay. In this area you have got all wind directions covered within a few miles.

Big Sand - Gairloch

Gairloch is situated on the North West Coast. The main route is fromInverness. Head towards Ullapool. Turn off towards Gairloch just past Garve. To get to the beach head through the village (left off main road), carry on along the road approximately 4 miles to Big Sand. The beach is accessed from the caravan park / camp site, left off main road. Stop at the shop / reception and pay the token carpark fee and directions where to go. You head back to the left along the single track roads within the campsite to the top of the sand dunes. Park off track and rig on grass. Sail from very nice SW facing sandy beach. There has been hire from a container on the beach during the summer months in previous years. (You would need to confirm that this is still the case.) This is probably the best windsurfing location in the area facing the prevaling SW wind direction.

Windsurfing Locations : Camusdarach Bay, Morar

I've only sailed here in light SW winds, but it should be good for anything with some west in it. Camusdarach bay just south of Morar is a small sandy bay backed by protected dunes that faces northwest. This is on Scottish Natural Heritage's list of most beautiful beaches in Scotland. The sandy bottom shelves off fairly gently so you can touch bottom for maybe 30 metres. The sailing is lovely with views of Rum, Eigg & Skye. The rocky promontary at the north end of the bay is to be avoided and heavy swells might break quite a long way up the beach at high tide. Also there's Loch Morar just inland, which would probably be OK in an easterly.

Practicalities / Access - Either park in the (height restricted) SNH carpark and lug your stuff 150m through the dunes or blag/pay your way in the nextdoor campsite and you can probably drive to within 20m of the beach.

Rigging - on the beach.

Toilets / Showers - maybe, in the campsite if you've blagged your way in.

Food & Drink - Pub/hotel and a Thai takeaway in Morar.
