Energy Report
Every room in the house will be assessed for thermal efficiency and heat capacity. The
insulating properties of all walls, ceilings, floors, and windows will be rated and the
energy requirement of each room will be calculated to achieve the right temperature.

Heating Elements
The optimum size, type and position of radiators will be determined to deliver the
heating demands of each room.  Radiators equipped with thermostatic valves will
enable fine tuning of temperatures in individual rooms. Where Underfloor Heating is
specified each room would have its own wall mounted thermostat.

Boilers
Government regulations now rate boilers according to efficiency and all new boilers
must meet minimum levels. We will recommend the boiler most suited to each
application. This will usually be a condensing boiler where exhaust heat is used to
preheat incoming water, and domestic hot water is stored in a cylinder. In smaller
premises a combi boiler may be preferred, where hot water is drawn directly from the
boiler on demand. The total energy demand of the premises for space heating and
domestic hot water will determine the boiler capacity. Modern boilers are much smaller
than those fitted say ten years ago and may now be wall mounted and tucked away in
inconspicuous places. Also boiler controls are now more sophisticated giving optimum
performance.

Hot Water Cylinders
Modern practice is to use unvented hot water cylinders. This means that instead of
being fed by a header tank, the cylinder is fed directly from the mains cold water supply.
This has the advantage of giving balanced hot and cold water pressure supplies to
showers, creating power showers without the need for booster pumps. The main cold
water supply pressure must be above a minimum level, which most are. Cylinders also
usually include an electric immersion heater for back up and, where solar heating is
installed, a second heat exchanger coil. Solar Heating can supply 70% of the domestic
hot water requirement during the year in our region.

Controls
There is a wide range of control units for domestic heating systems. Usually a master
panel sits by the boiler with a remote programmable wireless unit with room thermostat
fixed elsewhere in the house. The programmable unit can be set to vary temperature
several times per day, seven days per week. For example cooler during weekdays if the
family is at work and school, and warmer in the early mornings, evenings and weekends
when everyone is at home. More complex and sophisticated controls can vary
temperature by time in different regions around the house.

Upgrade
Most existing systems that are more than ten years old will not meet the current
Government guidelines for fuel efficiency. In itself that will probably not worry most
householders, unless they are about to sell, but paying up to 40% more for fuel will.
We can recommend new approved boilers and controls which will pay for themselves
in fuel savings in a very short time. If you have an older system you probably have one
or more radiators that are slow to come to temperature, if at all. This is because pipework
has become restricted by accumulated sludge. It makes sense to clean out the system
before fitting a new boiler. We have specialist equipment which will flush out your entire
system with a pulsating pressure wave, removing all the sludge, and allowing free flow
once more. See also Fuel Prices
