There are many different processes involved in making Shaker Boxes, which are briefly illustrated here.
Bands of timber, which form the box sides, are marked out using templates for each size. These are thoroughly sanded before hand shaping. The bands are then immersed in very hot water until pliable enough to be formed. As the timber is supple for only a minute or so, each band must be wrapped around its former and shaped rapidly.

After tacking the band into an oval, plywood formers are inserted to keep the shape. A narrow band is then made in a similar fashion to form the lid. Both bands are left for at least 24 hours to dry out.
Lids and bases are made and inserted for each individual box ~ no two are precisely the same. They are held in place by carefully drilled holes, which are then pegged, as no glue is used.
After being carefully sanded inside and out, the boxes are ready for the application of finish. This can be paint, stain, or oil according to taste. Good quality wax polish is finally applied.
