Rover/Land Rover Key Fobs From http://www.remotekey.co.uk/

Has your key fob stopped working?

Try this first

The Rover and Land Rover key fobs use a rolling code system. When you press the key fob, the code changes every time, and the alarm box in your vehicle also changes its code to match with the key fob. This is a great antitheft system but sometimes the key fob and alarm box codes do not match and the system will not operate.

The most common cause for this is pressing the buttons on the key fob away from the vehicle, the key fob code moves on but the alarm box on the vehicle does not, so the two codes do not match. The key fobs and the ECU control box receiver on your vehicle have a clock, this clock also moves the code even if the key fob is not used.

Abbreviations:

  • ECU - Electronic control unit, the box which controls the alarm, immobiliser and usually the central locking fitted to your vehicle, the immobiliser ECU is a separate unit under the dashboard.
  • EKA - Emergency key access, this number has no connection to the remote key fob.
  • MHZ - megahertz (frequency number).
  • ARMED - this is when you have locked your vehicle with the key fob, the alarm system is active and the immobiliser is on.
  • DISARMED - this is when you have unlocked your vehicle with the key fob, the alarm system is not active and the immobiliser is off.

When you have locked your vehicle with the remote key fob the system is "ARMED". To "DISARM" the system you must use the remote key fob, if your remote key fob fails or is lost when the system is "ARMED" the only way to "DISARM" the system is to use the EKA code (this applies to the two button systems). If you have the one button Land Rover/Mini/Metro system you have no EKA. The only way to "DISARM" the system is to have the control box ECU reprogrammed by our specialist diagnostic computer.

Do not press the buttons on the key fob away from the vehicle, especially Rover 600 and 800 owners.

If your key fob has just stopped working try this:

  1. Unlock your vehicle with the key in the drivers door lock.
  2. Press the right hand button on the key fob 4 to 8 times.

If the above fails try this:

  1. Open the key fob
  2. Remove the battery
  3. Press and hold the right button down for 10 seconds, and the same with the left button.
  4. Refit the battery or a new battery.
  5. Unlock the vehicle with the key in the drivers door lock.
  6. Press the right hand button on the key fob slowly 4 to 8 times.
  7. Land Rover single button key fobs, press the key fob slowly 3 times next to the vehicle.

Rovers built before September 1995 on "L", "M" and early "N" suffered from key fobs losing the code, this can be rectified with a software update on the vehicle.

You may have to perform the above sequence if your vehicles battery has gone flat or is disconnected.

If all the above fails you can use the EKA code. For more information, see our Rover EKA Code section.

There is no EKA override code for Land Rover Discovery's and Range Rover classic fitted with the single button type key fob.

The circuit board of a two button Rover/Land Rover key fob

This is the inside of the key fob, the most common problem when the key fob fails is the component circled. Very carefully check to see if the 2 wire legs are attached to the component and the circuit board.

Rover/Land Rover 2 button key fob

For vehicles fitted with this key fob, new key fob replacements will require specialist programming equipment.

Rover/Land Rover single button key fob

Vehicles fitted with this key fob you can programme these yourself, provided the alarm system is "disarmed", once you have locked the vehicle with the key fob you must unlock the vehicle with the key fob, no tools are required, you do NOT have an EKA code on this system.

This key fob has not been in production since 2001, no parts or casings are available and generally they cannot be repaired.

If all of the above fails, have a look at key fob reconditioning

Or if you can remove the alarm ECU control box and send it to us, we can programme a new key fob to the box and get the EKA code. We will return the box within 24 hours, and you are able to just plug the ECU back in.

Call us on 0121 580 9090 or use the contact form and we will explain the location of your ECU control box.

Programming Lucas Key Fobs

When programming new key fobs, all key fobs are automatically erased from the ECU control box fitted to the vehicle. This is done because if you have lost a key fob or had a key fob stolen, the lost or stolen key fob should no longer work on your vehicle.

At the time of programming all key fobs you need to work with the vehicle must be programmed.

The Land Rover, Mini and Metro single button key fob systems can only have 2 key fobs programmed in at any time. The Land Rover and Rover 2 button key fob systems can have up to 4 key fobs programmed.

This applies to all Lucas systems (not Valeo).

Programming Valeo Key Fobs

The Valeo system, as fitted to Rover 600 and 800, works on a totally different system to the ones mentioned above.

The key fobs often stop working for no apparent reason. The key fob LED still lights up and it still transmits but t does not work. This is a common problem, the only explanation is the key fob has lost synchronization with the vehicle and cannot be re-synchronized.

Do not press the key fob away from the vehicle.

Second hand keys, even if you have the bar code, cannot usually be re-programmed.

Do not purchase second hand key fobs they will not work!!

Range/Distance Problems

Does you key fob not operate very far from your vehicle?

This can be caused by many factors. As we use more wireless electronic products, the radio waves interfere with each other and this is the most common problem when your remote key fob loses its range from your vehicle.

Known problems are also poorly fitted receivers on the very early Rovers 1993 -1995 and Land Rover Discovery 1995. It is common to be right next to your vehicle before the remote key fob will work. Remote key Ltd can change the part cheaply in the control ECU giving you much better range.
