Our Golf in Spain -On The Costa Blanca - (This page is under development as we get time)

One of the principal reasons for us wanting to spend more time in the sun is our wish to pursue our hobby of playing Golf. The Costa Blanca offers a great opportunity to golfers from U.K. with its ever increasing number of excellent courses suited to all levels of participants in the sport.

La Marquesa Golf & Country Club has become our home course in Spain as it is closest to our apartment and can be reached within fifteen minutes. The staff are friendly and welcoming both on-course and in the clubhouse. The course is well maintained and is a challenge to most levels of golfer providing good holoday golf.

Some views and comments on La Marquesa

La Marquesa Golf and Country Club is located in the town of Rojales, some 50 kilometres from Alicante, close to the A37 and the N-332 roads.Set in low-lying land, the gently rolling slopes lend themselves to the layout of a very fine golf course. The greatest challenge this course sets comes from the complicated undulations of each of the 18 greens. The fairways are wide and flat making this an easy course to walk, the distances between greens and tees are short. The majority of the holes are "friendly" however there are a few twists in the plot to keep the golfer on their toes if they want to score well. Streams and lakes border the course, which gives excellent views and provides beautiful, natural surroundings to play golf in.

The Club House is located in the centre of the golf course. It has a coffee bar, pro-shop and restaurant with a splendid terrace for viewing play on the course.

On La Marquesa Practice Ground

The practice facility at La Marquesa is very good and available on a pay-as-you-use basis for both members and non-members. The main field is well over 250 metres long with markers at 50m, 100m, 150m and 200m. An extension field ensures that even the biggest hitters are accomodated. The practice mats are located under cover which is ideal for both shade and shelter as necessary. Practice balls are available at reasonable cost from a dispensing machine and soft drinks are similarly at hand. Pitching / chipping greens and practice bunkers make this an excellent addition to the club. Lessons are available from the club professionals.

From the 1st tee

This is a reasonable long Par 4 hole. The tee-shot is played across a drainage ditch which comes into play on a number of holes throughour the round. The landing area for the drive is wide but the ditch catches a lot of sliced shots. The ditch is deep and most golfers carry a long retriever device for recovering stray shots.

The 3rd fairway from the tee.

The 3rd is a short Par 4 hole with no particular difficulty although a sliced shot is likely to disappear onto a road which runs along the right hand side. The green is well protected with bunkers and trees giving an interesting approach shot.

The 5th green with the practice ground beyond

The 5th is a fairly long Par 3 hole. Played from an elevated tee the shot is across a small valley to a slightly raised green which is surrounded by strategically placed bunkers set to catch the wayward drive.

The 15th Green

This is, in our opinion, the most difficult greens on the course. A long Par 3 hole, it has out-of-bounds by way of houses and gardens all along the right hand side of the fairway and marshland to the left and rear of the green. The green itself has three levels with banking running from one to another. Different pin positions ensure an "interesting" range of different putts are required to complete the hole. Leaving with only a bogey here is often a bonus.

From the very high 16th tee looking down the fairway.

One of the Par 5 holes on the course, the gents tee is set high above the 15th green offering a wonderful view down the fairway. The landing area for the drive is fairly wide allowing most levels of golfer the opportunity to "go for it" although the right-hand side is dangerous with trees and water all the way down to the green.
