On the 20th September Wilf was
out and about again in Wales, although Cardiff MES were holding their Open Day
he decided to visit Cyfarthfa Park Miniature Railway which is the home of
Merthyr Tydfil & District Model Engineering Society.
A week before going to Wales
an email was sent to them to make sure they would be running the trains. It
was confirmed that the trains would be running and he would be most welcome.
The day was a nice and sunny
day arriving mid morning even though the trains would not be running until 2pm.
In the park there is a castle which is now a museum; it was free to get in so as
you know Wilf would not miss out on that.
The main theme of the museum
was about the area over the years and you will see this in the photos. After the
tour of the museum it was time for lunch so after a walk round the very large
lake it was in to the children's park and the picnic tables.
At 2 o'clock he made his way
to the track and introduced himself. He received a warm welcome and was allowed
to walk round the site except in the tunnel. Having gone through it later when
he took a train ride he realised it was to narrow for walking through when
trains are running.
After a walk round the site,
asking a large number of questions and taking lots of photos it was time for a
ride. The train departed from Castle Halt, making its way through the tunnel,
over the viaduct, on its way to the banks of the lake, returning through the
cutting to the forecourt of the Castle. The club is hoping that they will be
able to extend the track before long. I wished them well on that and hope
to go back when they have. A very enjoyable day and thanks for the warm welcome.
