ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This convention list was inspired by the MAGICIAN, Chris O'Shea.  He needed some details for his convention list - Connotation about German conventions because his source had dried up. I was able to provide details of German and other European cons because of my knowledge of German, Swedish and French. This convention list has grown from those small beginnings. The details listed here are largely drawn from the original sources but they are supplemented by information that Chris has put on his website. This is to ensure that when two or more conventions share the same weekend, you can choose which one you would like to go to. Please note that external links are in normal type and local links are in bold type.
I retain the copyright to these pages but they may be copied for the benefit of fans provided an acknowledgement of this source is given.
.

Important Notes for Fans
I request all con runners to look at the way that I display the information for each convention in my convention list and then send me an email with the appropriate details for the con concerned - preferably in the style and the order that I use. I now have a page with an explanation of the layout that I use and a copyable layout sequence that you can use to paste the bare bones of a convention entry in an email. It will also help you to remember to include items like the date and the location.
If your convention is listed here, please add a link to this page.

Go to the layout form page

I am happy to include any information regarding SF and fantasy related conventions in my list but I cannot afford a lot of time these days to go looking for it or ferrreting out details from a disorganised website. (Beware of using Microsoft Frontpage to produce web pages. Websites created this way will often cause non-Microsoft browsers to crash. If a website crashes Netscape 4.7, it will not be knowingly listed. Don't alienate a lot of potential visitors.)

I now have a policy of not showing emails in the usual format on my website. Newly received email addresses (as of September 2002) are now shown as they are spoken in Britain. My email address is now in the form: wilf dot james at ntlworld dot com.
This does not make the email address unusable to humans but it beats most spammers' robots. I try to prevent spammers sending spam to con runners by this method.
I typically get 90 emails a day, of which between 80 and 86 are spam so I am very much aware of the spamming problem. I am therefore removing all instances of my conventional email address from this website.

Suggestions for Anti-Spam Legislation

I have generally received compliments about the way that I present convention information in my list but that does not mean that it cannot be improved. I welcome any suggestions or comments that could lead to an inprovement in the way that the information is presented. There was no date index system included in the original list until someone said that she found the very long list hard to browse through to find a convention. I trust that the indexing system that I have devised has provided a partial solution to that problem. The change in presenting email addresses to a form that spammers' robots could not collect came about after some conrunners wanted their email addresses omitted to avoid getting spam. I started by changing a to ä, e to é o to ö etc. and @ to § to make the email addresses readable to humans but useless to spammers. Then I saw how someone had used the written version of the spoken form. I thought that it was a better way than I had thought of to beat spammers so I now use it for all new email addresses.

Please note that illegal spammers often offer the choice to have an address removed from a mailing list. A reply asking to be removed will be used as confirmation that the email address is valid so that it can be re-used or passed on to another spammer. Do NOT reply to spammers!
Legitimate organisations respect requests for removal from mailing lists. Please do not confuse the two.

I advise all fans to contact their local member of their national government (MP, senator, etc.) to ask if some form of legislation can be made into law for all mass mailings to include the source ISP's internet address. In that way it will be possible for recipients of spam to contact the ISP concerned to complain about the unwanted spamming. This action will not (generally) affect reputable organisations that will remove names from mailing lists on request.
This is a link to the letter I have sent to my MP.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I ALWAYS USE THE DD/MM/YYYY format for dates.

Past Conventions 2000  2001  2002  2003  2004  2005  2006  2007  2008 & 2009 are now recorded on their own pages too.
See what you have missed!
If you cannot wait to go to the next con, see if there is an SF CLUB near you.
International SF Clubs and Meetings

Conrunners from all over the world are invited to send me details of their events in Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Norwegian or Swedish. I will translate the text into English and submit the result to the sender for approval. Your flag will be added (if it is not displayed already) as soon as I get con information from your country.
Send me details of your event at my spamproof? email address: wilf dot james at ntlworld dot com

Please note the format that I use and send me the con details in the same format. This will make it easier for me to display your con as you would like it displayed on this page. Go to the layout form page to see how it should be done.
Media Fans - Please note that actors and other media personnel's (past) roles are omitted. (You should know what they have done!) :-)

Please note: The translations of the con descriptions are more fannish than pedantic. The con information has been checked from the original sources where possible.

These con listings have been taken or translated from ConNotation, Ansible  Fans Across the World, the SFCDSF-Infodienst, Jenga's Massive List and other websites in Europe. More convention information is always needed.

Note: Because I get so much spam I use the word Convention in the subject line as a filter.
Please put the word Convention in the subject line of any email to me. It does not matter if the subject has nothing to do with conventions. Unexpected emails usually get mixed up with the trash and can be lost. The Convention filter keeps such emails out of the trash. Dixieland/Traditional/New Orleans Jazz Calendar
