HanseCon 18 Return to Ly-Con
Location: The CVJM-Haus, Große Petersgrube 11, Lübeck, Germany.
Theme: A fannish event to mark the conclusion of the year. Hansecon has a traditional banquet at the Schiffergesellschaft (Ship's company) restaurant in Lübeck.
If it is not a banquet it is an excellent dinner where the waiters usually come around and ask if you want seconds. Plenty of opportunities are offered during the con to sample the charms of the well-preserved historic Hanseatic City of Lübeck in the company of friendly, well-informed fans. Lübeck is the marzipan capital of Germany and Hansecon marks this with a fannish marzipan "potato" rally. The "potatoes" are marble-sized balls of marzipan. Hansecon is a con that I recommend every British fan to attend at least once. It has everything to recommend it. How many cons offer membership, bed and breakfast for 5 days and a banquet for less than GBP70.00?

Ryan Air offers flights from Stansted to Lübeck return at only GBP 29.98. :-) (2001) (But there is a catch! Airport taxes and credit card charges increase this to GBP 51.78.) :-( (2001) It is still pretty cheap anyway. :-)
Note that Ryan Air often offers even cheaper fares for promotions - down to just GBP 1.00 - always check. (10/10/2001 the one-way fare to Hamburg (Lübeck) was shown as GBP 14.99)
The bus from Lübeck Airport to Lübeck City Centre takes 30 minutes and costs Euro 2.00 (GBP1.25) one way.
Get off when Kohlmarkt stop is announced on the bus. It is literally a two minute walk to CVJM from there.
Return from Sandstrasse (likewise around two minutes) or the central bus station
(ZOB = ZentraleOmniBusBahnhof) in Lübeck.

Membership: Euro15.00 (GBP10.00) plus Euro15.00 (GBP10.00) for the subsidised banquet.
Accommodation: CVJM = YMCA. Euro10.00 (GBP6.50 per night (5 nights) in mini dormitories. Please bring your own sheets and pillow (or sleeping bag) or pay Euro4.50 (GBP3.00) (once) for bed linen.
A German breakfast is offered at Euro 3.00.(GBP2.00)
Hansecon members are expected to be the only residents during the con.
Total anticipated cost for the 5 day con including travel, membership, accommodation, breakfasts and the banquet from Stansted airport = GBP 123.00 (approx). Find a cheaper con!
Note that you will have to pay for any other food and drink that you will need as at any con.
NOTE: CVJM is pronounced: "say fow yot emm" by Germans. ((fow like how not low) It stands for "Christliche Verein für Junger Männer")
