Important Announcement from the Committee 15/03/2004
THE CLIFTON HOTEL: During our most recent site visit we found that the promised refurbishment of the Clifton Hotel has not been started. In consultation with the Blackpool Tourist Board Accommodation Bureau we have decided to move the committee and guests to the nearby Carlton Hotel. All other convention members that were booked into the Clifton through the Tourist Board should have been contacted by now with a recommended alternative hotel.

Ryanair is currently offering flights from Stansted to Blackpool at the Ryanair price of GBP 7.99 each way.
BEWARE! This price does NOT include airport charges or taxes and the Ryanair handling fee.
DO NOT BOOK WITH A CREDIT CARD IF YOU HAVE (or can get) A DEBIT CARD.Ryanair charges GBP 1.00 or nothing for DEBIT card transactions but charges GBP 4.00 for CREDIT card transactions.
The Electron/Debit card is the bottom selection on the list of acceptable payment cards.

Blackpool airport is only about five miles from the centre of the town.

Accommodation in Blackpool
I have used Smooth Hound to find cheap places to stay ever since I first found the resource on the internet.
It has the advantage that it shows the prices and the booking system for each hostelry with the map location via Multimap. (See the map below.)
You can choose the compomise between price and location to suit your time, your mobility and your pocket and there is an enormous choice.

 This is a link to an Ordnance Survey Map of Blackpool showing the airport and the central area.

There seems to be a shortage of maps of Blackpool that show where things are. This crude map is intended to show very roughly where the Winter Gardens (WG) and the Clifton Hotel are located. The committee will be staying in the Clifton Hotel.

If you use Smoothhound to check the locations of the hotel or guest house that you want to stay in, you can see if the place is anywhere near the area covered by this map.

The official Blackpool website links to maps are all dead.
This map is a better one than the one supplied by Multimap because it shows more detail - if you can read the street names etc. I have tried to make things a little clearer by re-writing in one or two street names near the Winter Gardens. The squares appear to be around 250 metres on each side so it is fairly easy to judge distances from the Winter Gardens.
The Clifton Hotel is in Talbot Square - a place not marked on any of the other maps that I have looked at on the internet.

I regret that I have not found any more of this map to show the same detail as here northwards - sorry.

Places to Stay in Blackpool
The following list is of places that offer a basic price of GBP 20.00 or less for a single night stay for a single room. The places have been selected from the Smoothhound list on the basis that they are all within one mile of the Winter Gardens. Most of them are much closer than that. This is not intended to be a bypass route to booking somewhere to stay. The convention organisers have established links with the Blackpool Accommodation Service for this purpose. However, the Smoothhound service does enable you to have a look at the location, prices charged and the facilities available for a very large number of hostelries before you make your choice. Many places offer a small discount if you say that you have used Smoothhound to select the place where you wish to stay.

ACCOMMODATION LIST
Possible Places to Stay in Blackpool that have a BASIC price of £20.00 or less for a SINGLE room.
Please note that these low prices will not be available at Eastertime.
Where there is a range of prices quoted on the Smoothhound site you can expect to pay the higher one at Eastertime.
Double prices are twice the single price or less. If you are single and have a friend that you can share with, you may save a few pennies by booking a double room for the two of you.
They are all in Blackpool, Lancashire so this part of all addresses has been deleted for clarity.
Note that there are two Sunnydale hotels in the Smoothhound list. Make sure that you select the right one in Vance Road.
The Highfield Hotel has been included at £21.00 because it is so close to the Winter Gardens.
There may be other places that are as close to the Winter Gardens as these places. These are only the ones that I have found.

A FLAME
I have tried to find a map that shows the post code areas around Blackpool. It seems that Royal Mail does not publish one. It is apparently one of the best kept secrets in the world. The Royal Mail website is a horrendous mess that takes ages to load with broadband. I found by telephoning the most unhelpful website advisor that if one searches for individual post codes, one can only have 8 searches in one day. There is apparently no way to check which post codes are within walking distance of a particular place. In addition, the website uses the very smallest type that one can use with a browser so that it is useless for anyone who has a slight eyesight defect. It is only at the very bottom of the page in equally small type that there is a tab labelled access. It would not normally be found by anyone who could not see perfectly. If one uses this tab there is a menu in much larger type that is confusing because the reader does not know which link to select.
If ever there was a website designed to try to drive away customers, the Royal Mail website is one of them. By the way, if you find the Royal Mail website with a search engine, the internal links on the website do not work properly. I was told by phone that one has to shut down one's browser and type in www.royalmail.com to access the web page without problems. If you have the time and the inclination, phone (in Britain) 08456 06 04 06 and complain about the horrendous website and ask why there is no way that anyone can get a postcode map of a town on the internet.
