German SF Club Meetings
This German information is provided by Birgit Fischer BiFi
- Chairman of the German Science Fiction Club (SFCD)
(Translated from the German by Wilf)
In Germany they have a lot of
SF meetings that are more or less equivalent to the British "Ton"
meetings. These are generally called "Stammtisch".
A Stammtisch literally means a table reserved for special pub
regulars. This has been extended to include a room in a pub or
cafe where a group of friends regularly meet. It is usual
for SF, Media and Perry Rhodan fans to meet together at these
events but Perry Rhodan and Media fans sometimes have their own
separate meetings. I suggest that non-German fans check with the
appropriate contact person before attending one of these meetings
- particularly if your knowledge of German is limited. You will
still be made welcome even if you don't speak any German.
The country for all addresses is Germany unless otherwise stated.
The German telephone prefix is 0049. The initial 0 in all quoted
numbers is omitted for calls made from outside Germany.
Always make contact beforehand if you wish to go to a meeting
held in someone's house or flat.

Swedish SF Clubs and Meetings
This is just the beginning of what I hope will be a full list of Swedish SF Clubs and meetings. Fans from outside Sweden are advised that all Swedish fans speak English so that anyone reading this will have no difficulty when communicationg with Swedish fans. However, it is inevitable that an English speaking fan will have to attempt to pronounce the names of Swedish towns and streets at some time or other when in Sweden. I therefore offer a short guide to the way Swedes pronounce the names of towns and streets. See the guide to Swedish Pronounciation

A
Rough Guide to Swedish
Pronounciation
Firstly you must remember that
the Swedes use three more letters in their alphabet - å,
ä and ö. These come at the end of the alphabet in the
order shown here. This is important if you want to look up a word
in a dictionary. å, ä and ö come after z.
Things can get a little more complicated when these characters
are not available in a computer font. the å is replaced
by aa, the ä is replaced by ae and ö is replaced by
oe. I use the usual Swedish versions here because they can be
displayed in HTML on any standard PC running any version of Windows.Use
the number pad with Alt to produce these letters. å = Alt+0229,
ä=Alt+0228, ö=Alt+0246, Å=Alt+0197, Ä=Alt+0196
and Ö=Alt+0214.
The sound equivalents are based on the way an English person from
southern England would pronounce the example words.
The å or Å is roughly equivalent to "aw"
as in law when long or more like the "o" as in lot when
short.
It is NOT the same as "or".
The ä or Ä is roughly equivalent to "air"
as in fair.
The ö or Ö is roughly equivalent to "ur" as
in fur.
The letter y or Y is always pronounced as a vowel. It is close
to the "ew" sound in few.
The letter e or E is close to the sound of "ay" in say.
The letter i or I is like the "ee" in need when long
or like the "i" in this when short..
The letter o or O is not much different from the English o.
The letter u or U is like to "oo" in root.
Swedish has some ways of using consonants that non-Swedes find
strange and sometimes hard to pronounce.
The letter k or K can be like the English k but changes to a unique
Swedish sound when followed by ä, ö or y.
Curl your tongue backwards so that it touches the rear of your
palate. Lower it a little then try to make the "sh"
of shoe sound.
I will represent this sound as "hs" in further
examples. The usual English "sh" sound is made with
the tongue at the bottom of the mouth. With a little practice
you will be able to make a fair attempt at making this sound in
the Swedish way.
The Swedish equivalent of the French word "cher" is
written "kär" and has a very similar sound.
The city of Linköping is roughly pronounced as lin-hsir-ping.
The "ir" part as the "ir" as in shirt. The
hsir part is pronounced as one syllable, a bit like cher
but with the vowel sound as in shirt.
There are a lot of consonant combinations that are pronounced
in a similar way to hs. The hs version of "shoe"
or hsoo is like the sound of the number 7 or sju.
The consonant combinations stj, sk and skj are also like the hs
sound as in "stjerna" or "stjärna" which
means star, "skinka" which means ham, and "skjuta"
which means shoot. (Stjerna is an old spelling that you will see
quite often in street names.)
Please note that Swedes use many foreign words (mostly English)
and retain the English pronounciation for them.
The letter g or G is often pronounced as the English y. This is
in rg combinations at the ends of words. The city of Göteborg
(Gothenburg) is pronounced roughly as "yertuhboree".
(The r is only just pronounced in this example so that the "boree"
part is almost pronounced as one syllable - nearly like "boy".)
The English "bury" as in Canterbury is very nearly the
same as the Swedish "berg". The "soft" g sound
used in Geraldine is never used in original Swedish but can occur
in imported words like garage and gendarm.
The letter j or J is always pronounced like the English y as in
you or yacht. Jord sounds like "yoord" and means Earth.
The dj combination is the same as j. Djur sounds like "yoor"
and means animal.
All the other consonants are roughly the same as the English ones.
This is not a complete guide but I hope that it will help you
to get some idea of the way to pronounce town and street names
that you will see on a map.
Most Swedish street names end with "vägen" (vague-en)
= way or gatan (gartan) = street or road but literally, gate.
The n or en at the end means "the" (definite article,
common gender). On maps and sometimes on street signs vägen
is abbreviated to v. and gatan is abbreviated to g. You will also
see "torg" (toree - almost "toy") = square
or "torget" (tor-yet) = the square. The et at the end
also means "the" (definite article, neuter gender).
The posessive (genitive) case is indicated by an s as in Gustav
Adolfs Torg = Gustav Adolf's Square. (There is no apostrophe as
in English.)
Beware of English words spelled in the Swedish way. Site as in
website is written "sajt" and sounds the same.
Danish and Norwegian have comparable extra letters å, æ
and ø that have similar pronounciations to the Swedish
å, ä and ö. However, their consonants are generally
more like their English equivalents except that j = the English
y.
Norwegians replace the c in centre (center) with s and spell it
senter. Other words that use the s sounding c have the c replaced
by s likewise. Otherwise much Norwegian is pronounced like Swedish
when the words are similar. The Norwegian-Swedish dictionary is
pretty thin because so many words are similar with some slight
variations in spelling.
