The story is very long and a lot of characters are involved.
There is a name list with one line references to the status and roles played by each character. Marita's 24 students organised themselves into partners and preferred share partners in their own way. They produced a table that shows their relationships and their Spacer interests. This name list will be provided if required.

The Swedish friends of Marita, Kerstin and Kjell have asked that phonetic versions of their names should be included so that English speaking readers will know how to pronounce them correctly.

Note that the Swedish 'sh' sound is made by curling the tongue up backwards to near the roof of the mouth and blowing air through the small gap with the teeth apart and the lips open. It is not the same as the English 'sh' sound made by blowing air through closed teeth. The pronunciations given are approximate.

Marita = mer-reet-uh with the accent on 'ma'. The 'uh' is only just pronounced.
Kerstin = shers-teen with the accent on 'shers'. It is not sher-steen (Swedish 'sh' sound)
Kjell = shel. (Swedish 'sh' sound) The 'l' sound is unvoiced.
Broberg = bro-berry. 'bro' ia half way between the 'bro' in broken and 'brew'.
Sundström = suhnd-strurm

The Chinese names have the surname first with (usually) two given names afterwards.
Tai Yin So = Yin So = Lt. Cdr. Tai.
Chao Lan Fang = Lan Fang = Lt. Chao 
Chang Tun Wong = Tun Wong = Admiral Chang
Li Fan Cho = Fan Cho = Student/Cadet Li
Mun Song Won = Son Won = Lt. Mun

Jean Valèry wishes it to be known that he is of French origin and does not like being called 'gene'.

The Russian and Greek names have been given their usual English spelling.

Dates and times have been given in the story when accurately known.
