Espen Baardsen
Position: Keeper. From: Tottenham, £1.25m
Norwegian Espen has played most of his football in Spurs reserves, in the shadow of Ian Walker and has moved to Watford in the summer of 2000 to deservedly play first-team football. An extremely talented goalkeeper, Baardsen will definitely be GT's no.1 but i'd expect Chris Day and Alec Chamberlain to definitely fight for the place.

Adrian Bakalli
Position: Midfield. From: RWDM, £100k
Capped by Belgium U21, Adrian looked a steal when Watford bought him in January 1999 but he has had little first team chances since then. He has only a couple of appearances for the club as sub. Will we see him more this term? I doubt it.

Alex Bonnot
Position: Midfield. From: Angers, free
Frenchman Alex looks like a decent, good, reliable defensive midfielder, he has made a good few Premiership appearances when Watford had injuries in their campaign. He is the understudy of Richard Johnson, Micah Hyde, Steve Palmer and even Clint Easton. So, not many chances of breaking into the top squad. Shame.

Alec Chamberlain
Position: Keeper. From: Sunderland, £40k
What can you say about Alec? Well a lot actually. He was pivotal in Watford's successful 97/98 Second division season and has gone from strength to strength. Last term he made some mistakes in crucial games to let in the opposition. (Namely Leeds at home) Although he is getting on a bit, he still has a chance of getting the no.1 jersey back.

Neil Cox
Position: Right Back. From: Bolton, £350k
Neil has showed time after time that he is definitely Premiership class and I was well pleased when he was headed our way in November 1999. He was an ever present in Bolton's successful promotion campaign and was in the side Watford beat in the memorable play-off final. Coxy is a great right back and will definitely prove himself this season in Watford's onslaught on Division 1.

Chris Day
Position: Keeper. From: Crystal Palace, part exchange
Whilst we were languishing in the Second Division going nowhere, Palace made a swoop for influential keeper Kevin Miller. We received Chris Day in a makeweight deal. A former England U21, bargain of the century? Well we'll have to wait and see. He single handedly helped Watford to an outstanding away win at Anfield and made other impressive performances that season. Let's hope he'll feature more this term.

Clint Easton
Position: Midfield. From: Youth team
We have expected so much from Clint in recent years and he hasn't really proved himself yet, which is unfortunate. Surely with experience he will become a good player and we will see him regularly in the near future.

Dominic Foley
Position: Striker. From: Wolves, free
Dominic really does look like a good striker and I think GT has got a real good eye for young talent. We may even see Foley play for his country in the not too distant future. Trouble is he has little chance of breaking into the top squad with the likes of Noel-Williams, Helguson, Smith and Mooney. Probably he'll be warming the bench for most of the season.

Nigel Gibbs
Position: Right Back. From: Youth team
The longest serving member to Watford in the current squad. He was regular in the successful Watford side of the mid 80s. Recently Gibbsy has reached the pinnacle of his career but he has helped the Hornets to two successive promotion campaigns, he has only recently lost his place to Niel Cox but is always waiting in the wings for a recall. We may even see him coaching soon.

Johann Gudmundsson
Position: Midfield. From: Keflavik, £200k
Icelandic Johann has been a real enigma in the squad, we have hardly seen him. The only notable appearance was at Port Vale when he marked his debut with a couple of goals. Since then he has only made a few outings as substitute, for a player wanted by a bigger club before he came to Watford, is surprising.

Heider Helguson
Position: Striker. From: Lillestrøm, £1.5m
Watford's first ever seven figure signing and what a signing, he has all the makings of a very good player. Not only does he attack the ball in the air well, he is good on the deck. Remember those goals against Arsenal and Man Utd at home? That wonderstrike against Coventry? That's Heider that. If he can score those in the Premiership he'll be notching up a fistful of goals in the First Division. The future looks bright for Mr. Helguson, fantastic.

Micah Hyde
Position: Midfield. From: Cambridge Utd, £150k
Now let me get this straight. How the hell can a player with the ability of Micah be such a snip at 150k? Who was in the team when Watford launched themselves up several divisions? That's right, he was. Hyde and Johnson have formed an irresistable partnership in midfield and were one of the major factors behind Watford's success. He is all over the place, covering, attacking, defending. This man is like a rock in any Watford side.

Peter Kennedy
Position: Left Winger. From: Notts County, £130k
I remember Peter coming to Watford back in the summer of 97 and thought why the hell has GT bought a nobody from Notts County reserves? I had to eat my words, this was the season we became Second Division champions and who was top goalscorer? That's right Peter Kennedy. Then just before the end of that historic season he picked up an injury, since then he has not quite been the same. Don't get me wrong, Peter is a very good player and no-one can cross the ball better. Let's just hope he can recover quickly so he can fill the void on the left.

Charlie Miller
Position: Midfield. From: Glasgow Rangers, £350k
Hmmm Charlie Miller, he is well.... round! Actually Charlie does seem to have potential, he looks quite good sometimes but then most of the time he just looks like he can't be arsed. I mean he looks pretty good on the ball and has a couple of tricks up his sleeve but when are we going to see those aces? Come on Charlie mate, get out of the pub and onto the training field a bit more for your sake.

Tommy Mooney
Position: Anywhere. From: Southend, £95k
Has an almost as funny name as Paolo Wanchope but not quite. If anyone can be described as a crowd favourite it's Tommy Mooney. His determination is up there with a man running away from Vanessa Feltz! We all remember Tommy for scoring THAT goal against Liverpool and his memorable header against Bradford. Not good enough for the Premiership? Yea right.

Michel Ngonge
Position: Striker. From: Samsunspor, free
He is the sort of player to do the unpredictable, Michel (pronounced Michelle - no, i'm not joking) can run at defences and create goal-scoring opportunities for his team mates. Pacey, strong and has an eye for goal but you cannot help that he's surplus to requirements, with Noel-Williams, Smith, Helguson, Mooney and even Foley ahead of him. We will probably see an appearance a few times when things look tough.

Allan Nielsen
Position: Midfield. From: Tottenham, £2.25m
All I can say is: What a great aquisition. Anyone who disagrees is wrong. I'm sure he'll be classed up there as one of the great Watford players. Allan is Premiership class, not only that but he has played for his country, Denmark, with over 20 caps. Allan is one of those players that will never stop working for the team, you will see him tracking back, defending and going forward getting in those good positions for a goal-scoring opportunity. I reckon he is the sort of player that will take us straight back to the Premiership, a star in the making.

Gifton Noel-Williams
Position: Striker. From: Youth team
When he's on fire, he is really on fire! What amazing talent that has emerged from our youth team in recent years. Is it just me or does Gifton remind you of Emile Heskey? He is strong, pacey and will work for the team for 90 minutes non-stop. Our top goalscorer in our previous venture into the First Division and oh yea, that goal against Sunderland which sealed the win, wow! Trouble is he was injured during that match and isn't quite match fit, a few outings last season saw him playing well. I want Gifton back now! Is that too much to ask for?

Robert Page
Position: Centre Back. From: Youth team
Club captain Robert Page is the typical gritty centre back. He has the potential to be a top defender and could easily be comfortable playing Premier league football regularly. A regular Welsh international proves his ability. He and Steve Palmer have been the backbone of a very successful Watford side in recent years, taking the team through two promotion seasons. Would definitely have a regular place this season to command a team capable of automatic promotion.

Steve Palmer
Position: Centre Back/Midfield. From: Ipswich, 135k
Boffin Steve Palmer started his football at Cambridge University before he moved to Ipswich. He moved to Watford in September of '95 and was the first man to play in every position of a football team, yes, including goalkeeper holding the World Record. After moving from Ipswich to Watford he helped steer Watford back up to the First Division and further. We will definitely see Steve as cover with the emergance of Darren Ward.

David Perpetuini
Position: Left Midfield. From: Youth team
Is it me or does he look similar to David Beckham? Unfortunately that's where the similarity ends. In a mediocre team last season he shined, whipping in some decent crosses and getting in good positions but he didn't really give much cover to the defence. David may be the star we all expect him to be in the near future but for the moment maybe the odd first team showing will be it.

Paul Robinson
Position: Left Back. From: Youth team
Another rising star from the youth team. The solid left back has showed signs of sheer quality then at other times well dodgy. He is very irratic, sometimes he can't put a foot wrong. This season could be the season where we will see a confident, solid Paul Robinson, going forward and defending with the determination of Tommy Mooney, here's hoping.

Allan Smart
Position: Striker (yeah another one!). From: Carlisle, 100k
What a purchase from Carlisle! This man is worth his weight in gold just for scoring in the playoff final to seal the victory and Watford's return to the top flight. Allan is actually a top notch striker and could score goals on any level. I just can't see him breaking into the first choice squad much this term, which is a shame. We have such quality in strikers this time around, we definitely won't be short in that department.

Tommy Smith
Position: Striker. From: Youth team
Tommy Smith, what a craking youngster, who is scoring goals here, there and everywhere. These are goals against top notch opposition, so we can see a sparkling future for this young man. I can remember that goal he scored for us at Loftus Road vividly and just as he scored that you just thought errr...that was a bit good wasn't it? Come on, we need to give Tommy a run out this season because he is capable of setting this division alight and could be the next Kevin Phillips.

Darren Ward
Position: Centre Back. From: Youth team
I am so excited about this season mainly because it's Darren Ward's chance to impress. That sieve of a defence at the end of last season looked almost rock-like with Darren Ward there. I always think that a good defence denotes a good team, this season we will not be conceding many goals mainly due to the combined forces of Ward and Page! I can't help but think this is the area where we need back-up, there is a severe lack of depth, especially now that Mark Williams has departed.

Nordin Wooter
Position: Right Winger. From: Zaragosa, 950k
Dutchman Nordin is a revelation in the squad, he is so pacey a trail of fire follows him on the pitch, isn't he the first player to break the speed of sound? Seriously though, Nordin can play as a striker but I reckon his best position is right winger, he can torment defences in that position and get some decent crosses in. We should see him making appearances depending on his form, that includes his ace barnet.

Nick Wright
Position: Right Winger. From: Carlisle, 100k
Mr. Overhead kick extraordinare. Nick's goal in the playoff final was a touch of class in a game where Watford were brilliant. Nick has suffered from injury last term and didn't make many appearances. Ray Parlour doppleganger, Nick will certainly feature this season.
