Guidelines for Leaders

If you would like to volunteer to lead a walk, please mention this to Phil, the Walking Group Coordinator, on one of the walks. The programme is set up quarterly and you will be able to choose a convenient date.

Saturday walks are usually around 5-6 miles long and within 30 minutes drive of the central meeting points, but Sunday walks may be up to 8 miles long and within 40 minutes drive.

Guidelines

1. Make sure that you are completely familiar with the route. Remember that landmarks can change, so try out the walk beforehand if you are unsure.

2. If the group is larger than 8 people, please appoint a backmarker to ensure that no-one lags behind and that gates are closed.

3. Choose a start point with adequate car parking and avoid car parks with charges of more than £2 for the period.

4. Where pub or cafe facilities/car parks are being used, please liaise with the owner beforehand to ensure that they are agreeable and can cope with the numbers involved.

5. Monitor weather forecasts beforehand to check if a cancellation or change of route may be necessary.

6. If you plan to meet the group at the start point of the walk, please ensure that someone is available at the central meeting point to provide lifts and directions.

Snackpoint 7. Plan for a 10-15 minute break at a suitable midway point. In the case of a longer Sunday walk, it is customary to include a second lunch break at a suitable interval.

8. Aim to leave the central meeting points at 9.30 am and to leave the walk start point as close as possible to 10 am.

9. During the walk, try to stay at the front of the group, although circumstances sometimes make this difficult.

10. It is customary (but not compulsory) for the walk leader to hand round sweets or biscuits at the break.
