- WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
In order to comply with the Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health
regulations 1988, you must be aware of the following information.
Make sure you are - it could save your life one day!
PERSONAL SAFETY AND FIRST AID
HEALTH
HAZARDS
Tetrahydrofuran
(THF) is an organic solvent of relatively low toxicity. It may cause
eye burns. Liquid THF defats the skin, and this may lead to irritation.
SAFETY
PRECAUTIONS
Do not get in eyes. Avoid contact with the skin. Wash thoroughly after
handling. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapour. Use THF with adequate
ventilation. Observe OSHA standards.
PERSONAL
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Personal protective equipment should be worn whenever there is the
possibility of exposure or repeated contact with THF. The following
personal protective equipment should be available and worn as appropriate
to avoid exposure.
- Chemical
splash goggles.
- Hard
hat with brim.
FIRST
AID
In case of contact of THF with eyes, immediately flush the eyes
with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician.
If THF is swallowed do not induce vomiting. This is to avoid the
possibility of aspiring the solvent into the lungs where it could
produce severe lung irritation. Call a physician immediately. For
skin contact, immediately flush exposed area with plenty of water.
PRECAUTIONS IN USE
FIRE
HAZARDS
The chief hazard associated with the use of THF is its flammability.
The flammability characteristics of THF are similar to those of
acetone and n-hexane. Like these, THF is a Class 1B flammable liquid
as defined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Every
precaution should be taken to prevent exposure of THF to heat, open
flames, sparks or other sources of ignition. Electrically ground
all equipment.
SHIPPING CONTAINERS
Tetrahydrofuran is classed as a FLAMMABLE LIQUID under DOT regulations.Drums
carry a FLAMMABLE LIQUID label.
USES
SOLVENT
- Polishing
P.V.C. Handrails.
STORAGE
AND HANDLING
ENGINEERING
CONTROL OF HAZARDS
The design of THF storage and handling facilities as well as operating
areas should recognise the following key points :
- Store
and handle THF in totally enclosed equipment where possible,
or in systems designed to avoid human contact. If contact cannot
be avoided, personnel must wear proper personal protective equipment.
- THF
is a flammable liquid and should be stored and used in areas
protected from flames, sparks and excessive heat.
