What with the phenomenal success of JK Rowlings' Harry Potter books you might think that witches, wizards and warlocks are way inside the acceptance boundary, but in some minds the suggestion of a non-mainstream spirituality pushes them off to the blasted heath.

Which has just made me think of 'Satan' - now there's a good one!

Mrs W-J asked me what I was drawing, "Witch for the alphabet," "That's a good one - we don't even do Halloween anymore, because it's a pagan festival. I expect you'll add Halloween now…" Which is a valid suggestion, if a bit tricky to show.

Witch is also good because it's one of those pejorative words that feminists are trying either to replace (with Wiccan or whatever) or reclaim. Compare with the generally positive 'Wizard' - you don't ever see a Microsoft Installation Witch do you? Other pairs which carry negative associations in their female forms are Spinster / Bachelor, Crone / um… Sage? and animals such as Bitch, Cow and Mare. I'm just glad it's not my job to change the world…
