theo with a tommy gun, a big scar and a natty suit. The School Bully Like 'Bouncer' but with a gun then? The Headmaster Don't misunderestimate me! Our hoodlum wears spats and gloves (a bouncer wouldn't because the blood stains are a bugger to bleach out) and compensates for a deficiency in inches with an excess in attitude. and in a separate thread MafiaDrWombatMD Mafia The Headmaster See also the thread for 'Mobster'. I was reading recently that some politician had listed Mario Puzo's 'The Godfather' as one of his formative influences - who was it, Tony Blair? Peter Mandelson? Help me someone. I too was affected by the book but have so far managed to avoid a career in crime or politics. As a boy I chose it as my reward for winning a school maths prize and had the pleasure of collecting it on prize day from the Headmaster, who was known as "Luigi" or "The Boss" because of his italianate looks. I don't have any photos myself but see here - that's Luigi at the front in the gown and brown suit. The Lawyer You may recall the Poetry Society Christmas play of The Godfather, advertised as "Luigi plays The Godfather" on posters placed around the school: for which I was dragged out of an economics lesson and threatened with expulsion. Oh, and I also played the starring role. Did you not, Mr Headmaster, have a small role yourself? Your part was to yelp "OK Yeh!!" at intervals in the manner of the same economics master from whose class I had been, entirely coincidentally, dragged that morning (see above)? If anyone has a copy of the script.... He moved to Florida on retirement, where retired mobsters live. So they say. The Headmaster I'd clean forgotten my minor role as, um, 'Jock' Hetherington* was it? Whoever it was, he would customarily bang his board rubber on the desk to punctuate his catchphrase, so as a prop we had impregnated a rubber with what seemed like a box full of finely ground sticks of 'Cosmic' chalk. As I pounded it on the table I was enveloped in a thick white miasma of calcium carbonate. *left, circa 1961: (looking like a young Hitler) The Headmaster
You might recall this similar photograph of Winston Churchill, dressed to kill. Many politicians have tried since, but few have carried off the look with such panache (think of Saddam Hussein toting a shotgun on a podium - he looked like a Bavarian farmer going ratting). |
