You're right, 'leper' is a politically incorrect term. We should now use the more tortuous "people affected by leprosy", or "people living with Hansen's disease".

I visited a leper colony on Crete not so long ago, or rather on a small island a safe distance from Crete, don't want them flaking on us do we? It was however unoccupied.

You probably know that armadillos can get leprosy, but did you know that up until the 1950s staff at Japanese government run leper colonies executed many of the lepers' children? Neither did I.

I think to illustrate 'Leper' we could have the biblical image of a leper clad in rags, like Ben Hur's mum and sister, holding out a stump for alms.

It does? Surely it's just a small mythological humanoid, no more unPC than, say, 'Goblin'. We have 'Dwarf' to annoy the little people with.

In the same spirit as the existing 'Fairy', 'Beaver' and 'Cock' we could instead of 'Lesbian' have 'Dyke' with a little Dutch boy sticking his finger in (this story was actually a C19th invention by a writer in New York: see www.thehollandring.com/hans-brinker-story.shtml ).

We probably won't though.

<edit> But we might. It'll be under 'Dyke' if it happens.

I was thinking there must be some porno/paedo association that had passed me by, but the nearest I picked up was it being a Brazillian slang term for fellatio.

Hmmm - alphabet charts traditionally use objects rather than concepts. I felt uneasy enough suggesting Yellow for 'Y' (though that could be 'Y' for Yellow horde).

Really? I've seen 'Love' in the books of my youth. Why, it even appears in an alphabet book in the recent film 'Unleashed', featuring the excellent acting talents of Mr. Jet Li.

I remember them fondly too, though I can't imagine how they fit into a 'politically incorrect alphabet'. By the 'square viewing ports' you'll mean the lens protectors for the externally mounted cameras. It's true, they are quite stylish, in a "Michael Caine's specs on an 8 wheeled crab" sort of way.
