I don't think 'Aborigine' for an indigenous Australian is a term yet forbidden by the PC brigade*. 'Abo' definitely is, a similar fine distinction to that which allows 'Pakistani' but denys 'Paki', the difference being that the latter in each case has been used more often in a disparaging manner. In the 1970's it went unremarked in the UK when people referred to an Asian run corner shop as 'the Paki shop' - often a business revitalised by one of the influx of entrepreneurs of Pakistani origin who were expelled from Idi Amin's Uganda. Now using the phrase in some jobs could earn you a written warning.

*Not quite anyway. In a dictionary usage note I just read the following "As is often the case with words that categorize people, the use of the noun is more problematic than the use of the corresponding adjective. Thus a phrase such as ... the aboriginal inhabitants of the South Pacific is generally much preferable to ... the aborigines of the South Pacific". Right.

A B3tan* posted a story recently, his 'friend' had been staying in a hotel and checking the pay-per-view channels on offer. One looked particularly kinky: "Adult material - disabled". Imagining that he would be privy to a channel of amputee sex he opted for that one, then realised his mistake but hadn't the nerve to ask reception to reverse his selection and 'enable' the adult channels again.

DrWombatMD - we already have the 'Hun' as a suggestion on the forum (and have had for some time). It generated some wind but hasn't been included yet - some day however I will add a Prussian officer with sneer and scar, the WWI bogeyman bayonetting babies and raping nuns (his modern counterpart would be turfing infants out of hospital incubators, yet more PR fiction).

Attila himself however isn't so familiar a figure that he could be recognised from a portrait - unlike Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and Mao - so I can't see me adding him to the list.

You're showing admirable enthusiasm though I must say.

About a half of Germany's autobahn network already has a speed limit, on the rest you can go as fast as you like (though it might invalidate your fully comprehensive insurance - check your policy document). There are grumblings about the unrestricted sections - mainly on ecological grounds, because of the high fuel consumption of a car driven at high speed. However Germany’s transport minister Wolfgang Tiefensee is against a limit, saying “I am committed to a reduction in emissions but a general speed limit on open stretches of road does not make sense.”

The fastest I've been on the road was 150mph (on my bike) and it's quite different from a UK legal 70mph: the scenery blurs as you focus on a point ahead, where traffic is seemingly rushing towards you even though it's on your side of the motorway.

Legal notice: 'This wasn't on the M5 in Somerset, it was on the autobahn in Germany, officer'.
