Information About the School
(source: 20-23 January 2003
OFSTED inspection report)
This Catholic primary school has 208 boys and girls on roll and
is about the same size as most other primary schools. An average
proportion of pupils, somewhat over ten per cent, are from ethnic
minority backgrounds. Fewer than five per cent of pupils speak English
as an additional language and of these several are at an early stage
of learning English. An average number of pupils are entered on
the school’s register of pupils with special educational needs;
several have moderate learning difficulties, behavioural problems,
physical disabilities, or problems with speech and communication.
Children’s attainment on entry to the school is below average
and in several year groups there is a particularly wide spread of
ability. It is extremely difficult to recruit teachers to this type
of school in this area.
How Good The School Is
The school provides a satisfactory standard of education for its
pupils and there are many strong features as well as significant
areas for improvement. The quality of teaching is mostly good and
this promotes effective learning. Pupils’ achievement is satisfactory
but has been interrupted due to frequent changes in the teaching
staff of the school. Nevertheless, pupils attain at least average
standards in most subjects and in mathematics standards are above
average. The headteacher and her deputy work well together to provide
good leadership. The school governors give good support and help
to ensure that the school is managed well. The school provides satisfactory
value for money.
