The Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a lay worldwide organisation. We have a small group in our parish which meets on Monday at 8 pm in Holy Cross sacristy.

The meeting starts off by saying the Rosary, followed by reading from Legion of Mary handbook.

Once a week we visit the elderly, house bound, sick people, etc. We always go in pairs.

Order of the Meeting

The weekly meeting normally consist of the following activities:

  • Rosary prayers
  • Reports of previous week's work
  • The Catena (a Legion of Mary prayer)
  • Spiritual discussion
  • Work allocation
  • Concluding prayers

 

Legion of Mary Founder and Envoys

The following 3 people are up to become Saints of the Catholic church because of what their work and contribution in Legion of Mary and for the Catholic church.

1. Frank Duff

Frank Duff founded the Legion of Mary on 7th September 1921 in Dublin, Ireland. He was born on 7th June 1889. He worked for the civil service in Ireland but as the legion expanded he left his employment to devote all his time for the legion. Frank died on 7th November 1980. The cause of canonisation started in 1996 by the Archbishop of Dublin, His Grace Dr. Desmond Connell.

 

2. Edel Quinn (Venerable)

Edel Quinn was born in Kanturk, Ireland, on 14th September 1907. She was appointed to start the Legion of Mary in Africa in 1936. She established some groups there and she died in Nairobi, Kenya. She has been declared venerable, which is the first stage to sainthood. The cause for the Canonization opened in 1952.

 

 

3. Alfie Lambe

Alfie Lamb was born on 24th June 1932. He was appointed as Legion of Mary Envoy to South America in April 1953. He later died on 21st January 1958 and buried in Buenos Aries, Argentina.

 

If you have a devotion to any of these three and you get miracles attributed to them, you can help their process of Canonization by reporting the miracle to the Legion of Mary head office in Dublin.
