Zina Dizgalvis

Zina Dizgalvis was born on 02/07/23 on the family farm in Dunika.She was educated locally in Dunika and Barta before spending a year at Kaucminde followed by three years at the Liepaja valsts gimnasija. She left Latvia at the age of 21 before finishing her studies.

Raimonds Dizgalvis

Born on 31/03/29, Raimonds was also born on the family farm and educated locally. He left Latvia at the age of 15 before commencing his studies at the Liepaja Komercskola

Janis Dizgalvis

Born in 1887, the eldest of three children,Janis had a brother Miris Mikelis (died in 1896, aged 6) and a sister Maija After serving in the armed forces during WWI he returned to the family farm, married Anna Brundzats and became a magistrate and much respected figure within the local community.He left Latvia at the age of 57.

Anna Dizgalvis

Anna Dizgalvis, nee Brundzats, was born in 1900.She had a sister Maiga who, coincidentaly, also had a husband called Janis Dizgalvis (no relation).Anna left Latvia at the age of 44

Maija Dizgalvis

Maija Dizgalvis, younger sister of Janis, left Dunika for Riga where she married Mikelis Kjude (Misha), a ship's captain of the Grauda shipping line.To compensate for his long periods at sea she qualified as a telegrapher (the first female in Europe to hold this position on a ship) and was then able,whenever she wished, to accompany him in a working capacity.Aboard the SS Everene, and later the SS Everanne, they visited most European countries and made frequent crossings of the Atlantic.Maija and Misha remained in Latvia when the Russians invaded a second time in 1944. Misha's fate is unknown, but Maija was still in Riga in 1955, though, sadly, wheelchair-bound.
