Maija Dizgalvis

Maija Dizgalvis, younger sister of Janis, left Dunika for Riga where she married Mikelis Kjude (Misha), a ship's captain of the Grauda shipping line.To compensate for his long periods at sea she qualified as a telegrapher (the first female in Europe to hold this position on a ship) and was then able, whenever she wished, to accompany him in a working capacity.Aboard the SS Everene, and later the SS Everanne, they visited most European countries and made frequent crossings of the Atlantic.Maija and Misha remained in Latvia when the Russians invaded a second time in 1944. Misha's fate is unknown, but Maija was still in Riga in 1955, though, sadly, wheelchair-bound.
