IN SEARCH OF THE PENDLE WITCHES

 

Tonight we had decided to pay a visit to Pendle Hill for a second time, to hopefully capture some unusual phenomena , little did we realise just how much phenomena we were about to encounter.

As everyone is fully aware Pendle Hill is an extremely dark and foreboding place which can be seen for miles, casting its eerie shadow around the Lancashire area. It is also, probably the most haunted location in Lancashire. Known to most people  for the infamous Pendle Witches.

Probably the two most well known of these would have to be Alice Nutter and of course Demdike. There were three main families involved in this group. The Chattoxs family, the Device family, and the Bulcock family. They were all part of the notorious  gang of 13 people who carried out some despicable acts between them, and were responsible for the deaths of at least 17 innocent people.

In 1612 they were eventually tracked down and tried in a court of law, at Lancaster gaol, for practicing the art of witchcraft. All but three of them were hung for their crimes, the others died in the gaol.

Would we be fortunate enough, or should I say unfortunate enough to meet them tonight.

None of the team can come up with just one word to describe tonight's investigation. So I think we will have to borrow one from someone else, which will describe exactly how we all felt. That word would have to be….. “SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS.”

We arrived on the hill around 9pm and fortunately for us it was still light, and we had a fabulous view of the sunset while we all sat around the circle of rocks supposedly used by the Druids for their many ceremonies.

Well in answer to that question , no we were not to be disappointed again. Our special guest Laura had now joined in the glass experiment and we seemed to be making contact with  a spirit. We just couldn't believe what we were seeing. We were in the middle of a field and we were in contact with someone from the other side. As I mentioned earlier we also had two new experiments which we were extremely eager to put to the test, so we began with the crystal experiment. We placed the stand we had made with the crystal attached to it , on the table and began to ask if the same spirit could now move the crystal for us instead of the glass. Now, the weather conditions were not perfect for this experiment but we thought it was worth a try anyway. To our total amazement the crystal seemed to be doing what we were asking. Well actually I’ll rephrase that, the spirit seemed to be moving the crystal in the directions we were asking it to. We all looked on in ore as we asked the spirit to stop the crystal, and it did , even battling against the wind. If the crystal had of been made of metal, I think all the team would have been looking for the magnet that was controlling it. The movements were so intense we seemed to lose our train of thought for a while. The success of this experiment prompted us to want to try the pen divination straightaway. So we then arranged the table with a sheet of paper on it, and prepared for, what we hoped would be the best evidence so far. Especially if the results of the rest of the experiments were anything to go by. 

We decided that we would wait for it to get a little darker before we began the investigation. As we sat there taking in our tranquil surroundings, it suddenly dawned on us that we were in the middle of nowhere and if anything was to go wrong no-one would hear us. Their wasn't a soul for miles, well not of the living kind anyway.

After a short time when we had got our bearings and the darkness had begun to creep in on us, we began to organise our equipment ready for the nights experiments to take place.

We would be trying a couple of new experiments tonight in our attempt at proving that ghosts do actually exist. Tonight we were going to ask the spirits to write their message to us. We had an invention with us which was similar to the glass divination, but it had a pen attached to it so that we could hopefully read what they were trying to tell us. We couldn't wait to try this one . Also we had come up with another device which we could attach the divining crystal to, to try and accomplish movement without actually having to physically touch it. We were eager to see if any of these experiments would prove to be successful.

We were all getting excited at this point,  but nervousness was beginning to set in at the same time. Would we capture any thing of a paranormal nature or would we be going home with disappointment in our hearts. We hoped not.

We began tonight's investigation with some table tipping, but unfortunately after half an hour of trying we didn't seem to be getting any response from our intended spiritual guests. It seemed they weren't in the mood to perform this menial task, they wanted something a little more taxing. So we thought it a good idea to try something else.

Our next experiment was Glass divination, which always proves to be a success in getting things on the road, but would it prove to be as much of a success tonight, or would we again be faced with an uneventful experiment.

After a short break we decided to brave the pen experiment. This was one experiment we had never tried before , and we were all a little unsure as to weather it would work or not.

O how our uncertainties were proved wrong, so wrong.

We began by asking if the spirit could spell something for us, we didn't mind what it was, we just wanted them to write something. The pen began to move around the paper in quite a controlled manner, almost as if it was floating on a bed of air. What excitement, the experiment was working, but what were we receiving? We weren't too sure but our hearts were racing and the adrenaline was pumping. We then prepared a fresh piece of paper and asked the spirit to write the first letter of their first name, and the first letter of their surname. Again the pen began to move, but this time very quickly. The result of this sent a shiver down our spines. We couldn't believe what we were seeing, but well let you decide if our eerie feelings were justified.

As you can clearly see we did get some writing, and as I said earlier we will leave it for you to decide what you think it may mean. That’s if it means any thing at all.

Well as you can probably imagine we were truly stunned, and no matter which experiment we were to try next it was in no way going to measure up to this. Again there's only one word to describe what we had just witnessed………….

We did conduct a little more glass divination, but I think we were all still in complete shock to care what the glass was doing. So we decided we would pack up and head back down the hill to the car.

 

Had we been fortunate enough to have made contact with one of the Pendle witches, We hope that we had. We also hoped that we had not been chosen for any of their evil schemes while we were up there. Well, I’m writing this and it’s a week since we went there so it doesn't look like they possess the power they once had, all they can do now is what they probably see as party tricks. But don't get me wrong we were very grateful for what they did do for us.
