My good attempt at casting.
After many failed attempts
I decided to purchase some proper moulding sand. The stuff I got was Bentomix
from John Winter in Scotland. It was
£18.50 + VAT for 25kg. I also got a book called the "Foundry work
for the Amateur". It's rather good and the sand was excellent, too. By
the way, JW have a minimum order of £25. While you're at it, ask for their
catalogue. Got lots of good stuff in it.

Here's the mould split after the pour and cool period. Yep, the sand does go black and that should, according to JW, be discarded. The rest goes back in with the rest. |

When push comes to shove, buy the right stuff, the results are so much better.
