Yep, the sand does go black and that should, according to JW, be discarded. The rest goes back in with the rest.
My good attempt at casting.
After many failed attempts
I decided to purchase some proper moulding sand. The stuff I got was Bentomix
from John Winter in Scotland. It was
£18.50 + VAT for 25kg. I also got a book called the "Foundry work
for the Amateur". It's rather good and the sand was excellent, too. By
the way, JW have a minimum order of £25. While you're at it, ask for their
catalogue. Got lots of good stuff in it.
