Caving

Caving, or speleology,  is the sport and science of underground exploration. Caving has a long history in the British Isles, tracing its routes as a serious sport back to the late 19th century. Things have moved on a lot since those days of exploration by candle light in tweed jackets.

One of the most significant was the formation of the UWCM caving club back in 1978, it was then that the fun really began!!Gaping Ghyll Main Shaft

Fully equipped with electric lights, the latest SRT rope techniques and Swallet's thermal long John's we have continued to push the envelope of caving in England and Wales. Yorkshire, the Mendip Hills, Brecon, The Wye Valley - wherever water has left passages in Limestone we have followed.....

Many people think of caving as a sport dominated by unpleasantly damp, muddy crawls down tight holes. A sport frequented by sad, bearded men who enjoy supping real ale. Well I wont deny that some caves are small and muddy and yes, those bearded old boys still exist. But you cannot see the full picture until you've caved with us. Descend giant shafts over a 100m deep and 30m wide; walk through chambers bigger than the Albert Hall; splash through active underground rivers, climbing waterfalls and riding natural water flumes; gaze at limestone  pillars over 20m tall -  natural rock carved and molded into Gornier the most fantastic sculptures.

-Well I'm probably biased, but in my view Caving is one of the best "extreme sports" around, embracing  many aspects of Climbing, abseiling, genuine exploration and technical rope work. The perfect release from a week of Health Care, Physiology or Public Health lectures!!
