Strong showing for Respect in Clifton

Standing in its first council election in York, Respect gained 421 votes (13%) in Clifton finishing ahead of one of the Tory candidates and the fascist BNP.

In party terms, this means Respect came in fifth. This is a creditable result, considering that two months ago there was no Respect presence in Clifton.

Les Marsh sends his thanks to everyone who voted Respect for the first time, and to his team of helpers who leafletted the ward three times and canvassed as much of the ward as possible. We'd have liked to knock on every door in the ward, and spoken to every resident, but with an electorate of around 9,500 this wasn't possible this time.

This election has helped create a solid base upon which we hope to build Respect in Clifton and right across York.

We will field more candidates at the next local elections in four years' time, and will be seriously considering standing at the general election which could come at any time in the next three years.
