This photo was taken at the wedding of Annie Lamb, my grandmother's sister. The group, which includes my grandmother and great-grandfather, are apparently outside the registry office in Sculcoates, Hull.
Annie was born in 1911, a few years before the start of the First World War. She was brought up by her step-grandmother, Ann Jennison, who married Marcus Lamb.
In 1932 Annie married the young man second from the left in this picture, Walter Clayton.
Annie lost her husband about 8 years after this photo was taken. Walter died in the Dunkirk rescue in World War Two.
The Marine Deaths list states that Walter Clayton was aged 30 when he died. He is commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, which states that Able Seaman Walter Clayton (C/J 1138148, HMS Wakeful, Royal Navy) died on 29 May 1940. His name is included on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
HMS Wakeful was sunk during the mass evacuation of the Dunkirk beaches in the early hours of May 29 1940. She was returning to Dover for the second time, carrying around 640 rescued troops, when she was hit by a German torpedo. The ship sank rapidly and almost everyone on board was lost.
In recent years, two of the survivors were reunited with artefacts recovered from the wreck of HMS Wakeful. See the 24 Hour Museum website.
