Ann Pegg was the daughter of William Pegg, a hairdresser, of Friar Gate, Derby. She was baptised at St Werburgh, Derby, on 17 Aug 1816. In 1837 she married Thomas Longbottom (aka Thomas Richardson Longbottom), also at St Werburgh.
From the 1841 census to the 1871 census she was enumerated on the census as a Bookbinder's wife - or gave no occupation. The family were living on Ashbourne Road in Derby throughout this period, next to the printing offices, and it seems that the women, including the young daughters, were assisting with book folding and sewing, though this wasn't always stated on the census.
At the time of the 1881 census, after her husband Thomas's death, Ann's occupation is stated - she's a book folder. The family still occupy numbers 8 and 9 Ashbourne Road. Living with Ann are two of her adult children, William (aged 23) and Eliza (20). Also her daughter-in-law, another Eliza (23), and a granddaughter, Rose. None of them are involved in the book trade. William is a shoeing smith, Eliza a surgical bandage seamstress, the other Eliza is working as a cotton ball winder.
Next door, number 10, isn't included on the census return, so it's not clear if it was still at this time the printing offices, though it seems likely.
A complete change of location by this time. Ann was born in Derby and had lived there all her life, but here she's shown to be living in Islington, London, with her daughter's family. Eliza has married a James Petrie, a clerk of works. Ann is now aged 75, and gives no occupation.
By the time of the 1901 census Ann is back in Derby. The head of the household is Eliza Palmer, a widow of 67, a sister of Ann's. The household of six is, according to the census, living in a 3-roomed dwelling. They are at 3 Sowter Sq, Curzon St, Derby. This is in St Werburgh's parish, not far from where Ann spent most of her married life, though the house is obviously much smaller than her previous address on Ashbourne Road. She and Eliza both state under occupational details "lives on own means". Ann is now aged 84. The deaths indexes suggest that she died not long after this census was taken, in the June quarter of 1901.
