Charlotte Neylon (b1864)

Charlotte Neylon, 1882

Charlotte Neylon married my great-great grandfather Marcus Lamb on 28 October 1882. This photo was taken on the day of their marriage, and is the oldest family photo we have. (See the page on Marcus Lamb and Charlotte Neylon for the complete photograph.)

Charlotte was born in 1864, in Hull, part of a large family. Her father, Edward Neylon, was originally from Roscommon, Ireland. He had settled in Hull by the time of the 1851 census, and married Charlotte Ralph in 1852.

Aged 17, before her marriage, Charlotte was living for a time at 5 Davis Street, Hull. The 1881 census shows her living as one of three boarders in the household of William B Rufford, a "Refreshment House Keeper". She is working as a "General servant". Davis Street isn't far from her parents' address.

The following year, Charlotte married Marcus Lamb. Their first child, daughter Elizabeth (presumably named after Marcus's mother) was born in 1883. Charlotte was born in 1885 (named after her mother, and maternal grandmother). In 1889, Charlotte gave birth to Martin James Lamb, my great-grandfather (named after his paternal grandfather).

My mother told me that Charlotte had died in childbirth, and the deaths indexes record her death in 1891, aged 27. The records for the same quarter and district also show a William Lamb, who died aged 0.

Another of my female ancestors died young, in her 20s, from the complications of childbirth.

In the course of my research, I've found that most men who are widowed marry again very quickly, but Marcus, Charlotte's husband, didn't marry again until fifteen years after Charlotte's death.
