October 2009 - Our first 12-Car in the Rover September 2009 We've only gone and bought a Rover 25!
Why, you may ask? Well, why not? The Rover was previously a recce and chase car for the SPG Rally Team and came equiped with Leda suspension, Sump and Tank guards, underbody protection and gravel tyres and was the ideal basis for a club level rally car that could compete in a selection of events including;
2008 was our first real attempt at the local 12-car championship with Colin the Co-driver doing the driving and James (usualy the driver) doing the navigation. We had a blast but it was all done in Colin's wifes LPG'd Ford Focus. The car fared well but it's not built for the job and no doubt took a beating on the back roads of Leicestershire and Warwickshire. When the oportunity to buy the Rover 25 presented itself we discovered the perfect tool to use on the autumn/winter 12-car season and then develop it to enable us to have a crack at these endurance rallies (It can't be that difficult when you've seen some of the driving standards!) and then take the next step and maybe do forest rallies with it.
So what have we done to prepare it for a life with TRR Motorsport? Well nothing apart from installing a Custom Cages 10 point Bolt-in roll cage, a beautifully made cage (but to be honest, being told four different completion does p!ss your customers off! No really!). We also fitted our Motordrive seats and Harnesses from the Sunbeam and we fitted a pair of Hella 3000 lamps to turn night into day. Otherwise we've done very little. Oh, I forget to mention. To compete in 12-cars and endurance rallies etc you have to retain the complete interior, which we've done. And what would be more of a laugh would be to do full stage rallies in a SAGA FM Green Rover 25 Rally Car with a complete interior (including back seats, parcel shelf and cusions! Surreal eh?)
The finished article (except boot carpet) :-)
It's never going to make a taxi is it?
I was hoping to remove the dorr bars between the events but as you can see it's not going to happen!
We've used a strip of spare Twintex to fill in the hole we cut for the door bar. A tidy solution to an often forgtten problem. And the finished product?
Our
2009 Rover 25 Rally Car. Just the same as a MG ZR Rally Car but wit
a little Q-car-ness added into the mix! Oh, and it has air-con. :-)
