In compiling this on-line edition of Itinerarium Cambriae ('A Journey through Wales') by Ifor of Gwent, I have sought to preserve the character of the original while rendering it into reasonably readable English. Within the limits imposed by the medium, I have tried to give the impression of a medieval text, complete with the author's marginal and interlinear notes. I have placed a considerable amount of explanatory material at the end of each chapter, with links to and from these footnotes for the convenience of the reader.
This edition is, at present and for the forseeable future, incomplete and imperfect. I have not yet been able to obtain and transcribe the bulk of the Itinerarium, and other commitments prevent me from doing so with any speed.
I would welcome correspondence about this work from anyone who is interested in it. I can be contacted by e-mail at

Dr Trevor J Barker, August 1998.
Ifor of Gwent, or Ivor Went, is a somewhat enigmatic character. The evidence suggests he was born sometime around 1160 in the town of Caerleon in Gwent, and was raised at an orphanage by monks. His early adulthood was eventful but disreputable. Then, in his thirties, he entered the cloister and became a monk at the 'Abbey' (strictly speaking, the 'Religious Household') of Barwell-in-the-Fens. Little else is known, save that he served the community as Cellarer for some years.
