The 19th Chief Cashier, Basil Gage Catterns was born on 20 June 1886. He entered Bank service on 13 February 1908. During the First World War he served as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery and was severely wounded in the legs. In 1920 he settled permanently in the Chief Cashier's office. He became Assistant Chief in 1923, Deputy Chief in 1925 and succeeded Patrick Mahon as Chief Cashier on 27 March 1929. On 17 April 1934 he was appointed an Executive Director. He retired in 1945 and died on 5 February 1969.
