33. William Trimmer [image] (Robert Trimmer , John , John ) was christened 1 on 18 Apr 1749 in Farnham, Surrey. He was buried 2 on 5 Mar 1818 in Farnham, Surrey.
William Trimmer and his elder brother, Robert, were common brewers at the Star PH in Farnham, 1775-89. Later William went into the drapery business.
In 1793, France declared war on Britain. The resulting shortage of currency (due to stockpiling of gold by the populace) led the Government, in 1797, to lift the restriction on banknotes of less than £5 in value and the Bank of England printed the first £1 notes to be used in Britain. William Trimmer, in partnership with Wilkins, M. Page & Co. took advantage of the change in the law and, as Farnham New Bank, they made a sundry issue of banknotes of two pence (2d = 1p) denomination, that same year. The banknotes were payable at the âGoats Headâ public house, Farnham (from where the bank operated) and the âSpurs Innâ,â, The Southwark.
When William died, in 1818, the Hampshire Chronicle said: "His performance of the various duties of life was truly exemplary and in him the community has to lament the loss of a most valuable member".

Towards the end of the 18th century it became fashionable to write animal biographies, or 'autobiographies', whose main theme was to show children that all creatures have feelings and have a right to be treated considerately.
The first important book in this genre was Fabulous histories (1786) by Mrs. Sarah Trimmer (1741-1810), a much-loved story which delighted generations of children and was later given the more appealing and appropriate title of The history of the robins. In her introduction to the book Mrs. Trimmer, who disapproved of fairy tales and other flights of the imagination, takes pains to explain that, although 'the sentiments and affections of a good father and mother, and a family of children, are supposed to be possessed by a nest of Redbreasts', young readers should be 'taught to consider them, not as containing the real conversations of birds, (for that it is impossible we should ever understand), but as a series of FABLES...'
The adventures and experiences of a human family are interwoven with those of the robins and the author also introduces a variety of events and scenes connected with wild, domestic and farm animals and birds.
Mrs. Trimmer, albeit severe in her condemnation of tales of imagination and faerie, nevertheless believed that learning should be made attractive to children, and she designed lessons and accompanying volumes of illustrations about ancient, Roman, English and Scripture history, which were first published by John Marshall in the 1780-90s and then reissued by Harris, Hatchard and Tabart at the beginning of the next century. They were immensely popular and there can have been very few middle- and upper-class children who were not familiar with them.
