He was buried 3 on 27 Dec 1874 in St John The Baptist Church, Bisley, Surrey. He married Elizabeth Walden on 29 May 1822 in St Mary's Church, Horsell, Surrey. [Parents]
James was born in 1798, the same year that Nelson destroyed the French fleet in the Battle of The Nile.
In May 1822, aged 24, he married Elizabeth, daughter of John and Ann Walden. Originally from Stoke-next-Guildford, she was then resident in Horsell and they were married in St Mary's parish church. Horsell is a parish and village one mile North of Woking station. The church of St Mary the Virgin is a stone building erected in the time of Edward the First. It has an embattled tower containing six bells and a clock. The church has been much restored by the late Victorians.James and Elizabeth had ten children, two of whom died in infancy.
James seems to have lived his whole live in Bisley. From 1829 he is recorded in the church-warden's accounts as paying church rates of 6d per year (reduced to 4½d per year in 1832); As the rate was 8 pence in the pound, James held land valued at 15/-. Parish records and census returns from 1837 to 1865 describe James as "labourer" or "agricultural labourer", living alongside what is now the main Guildford-Bagshot road. In 1861 they were living in a house in Portlane, Bisley. 1846 Tithe Map & Award shows James owning a house and garden (plot 249 on map) measuring 2 roods 18 perch, (2816 square yards), with a total rent of 4/- per year. This house appears on the 1895 and 1915 OS maps as "Bedford Cottages".
On 10th June 1866 Elizabeth died. James, soon after, was moved into the Surrey County Asylum for Pauper Lunatics, latterly known as Brookwood Hospital, which had opened in 1867. He died here of 'old age' on 20th December 1874, aged 77. James and Elizabeth were both buried at Bisley church.

William Stanley was born in 1825, the year that saw the first horse-drawn buses in London and the opening of the Stockton-Darlington railway, and was baptised in St John the Baptist parish church, Bodicote.
Bodicote is a village, previously included in the parish of Adderbury, situated two miles South of Banbury. In 1831, the population numbered 779, from which it declined for the rest of the 19th century. The 13th century church of St John the Baptist was almost entirely rebuilt, in gothic style, in 1844.
In 1851 William was, like his father, an "agricultural labourer". He married Elizabeth Sabin in about 1855 and they had nine children - five boys and four girls.
In 1861 William was a "road labourer and toll collector", living in the turnpike toll house in Drayton, a village and parish 2½ miles Northwest of Banbury. Until the early 1700s, the roads in Britain were maintained by forced labour and, in the 1730s, Britain's roads were probably the worst in Europe. A large-scale building and repairing of roads took place between 1800 and 1830. It was put in hand by turnpike trusts, private companies who secured acts of Parliament permitting them to close roads off, with gates, and charge a toll to users. The turnpike road through Drayton, started in 1754, was one of the earliest. At one point there were nearly 8,000 toll gates in Britain. The delays due to the gates and the burden of the tolls caused great resentment and even rioting. In 1864, Parliament formed a turnpike committee with the object of drastically reducing the number of toll roads, although a number survived for many years.
In 1871, William and Elizabeth were living at Grimsbury Green Gate and Elizabeth was now the toll collector. Ten years later, they were living in Bodicote; William was now a "road contractor" whilst Elizabeth is described as a "laundress".
William Stanley died in Bodicote, aged 66, on 8th January 1892.

Between 1898 and 1910, "Mrs Stanley" receives regular payments for "Washing the surplices" and in one case for "washing and mending". Initially she was paid £1 per quarter, but from 1902 onwards there are only three payments of £1 mentioned in the Chuchwarden's accounts. In 1900 and 1902 "Mrs Stanley" also appears in the accounts paying subscriptions of 5 shillings (25p).

John seems to have had mixed fortunes over the years; From 1849-55 he is described as a "labourer", in 1861 as an "agricultural labourer and charcoal burner" at Manley Bridge (Charcoal burning was the method of producing charcoal by heating wood to temperatures at which it would normally burn but starving it of oxygen. This industry was once prevalent over the heavily wooded hills of Surrey and northern Sussex.); In 1868 John is a farmer at Clay Hill and in 1871 a "farmer of 15 acres"; In 1878 he is once more described as a "labourer".
