THE RED ARROWS

TYPHOON

Named after the RAF's latest air-defence fighter, Typhoon is a combination of long and wide formations, with Reds 4 and 5 flying at their furthest distance from the leader.  Typhoon has previously been known as Viggen (after the Swedish multi-role aircraft) and for one year as Flanker.  This was partly for political reasons, as it featured in the year the the Red Arrows completed a tour in what was the Soviet Union; the formation bears very little resemblance to the Su-27 Flanker.  In 2001, the Red Arrows introduced a new and improved Flanker formation, which is a far better interpretation of the Soviet fighter.
