THE TIGHT FORMATIONS

These formations are the smaller ones, where the focus is on extremely precise station-keeping, and holding a very tight formation. The team tend to include only one, or maybe two of these formations in their display.  In 2005, for the first time, the Red Arrows included an Apollo roll in their display, and even more unusually, rolled from left to right, away from the crowd.

Generally, these formations are flown to demonstrate the skill of flying in formation, rather than on high-speed maneouvtres, and as a result, the Red Arrows tend to execute maneouvres that show how well they can hold position during a single aerobatic maneouvre (like a roll or a bend).

The two tightest Red Arrows formations, where the aircraft are only six feet apart, are Short Diamond and Apollo. The other more compact formations that the team flies are Diamond Nine, Feathered Arrow, Shuttle (also know as Tornado), and Vixen.
