KITE

The first of the two 'gap' formations which the Red Arrows have flown, Kite was an innovation in 2002. A form of extended Diamond, in which Red 6 occupies the position normally flown by Red 7, and with Red 7 forming the tail of the kite, this formation is a welcome variation and addition to the display sequence. Not particularly difficult to fly, particularly since Red 6 (Synchro Leader) will be well used to flying in this position - in the previous year he will have flown as Red 7 and be accustomed to flying at the back of the Diamond formation.

In 2002, the Red Arrows changed formation from Kite to Apollo during a loop - a subtle but well-executed change, with all team members shuffling either forwards or backwards during the change. So far, 2002 is the only year in which the Red Arrows have flown the Kite formation, except for 2007, when the formation was called "Stingray".
