FEATHERED ARROW ("FRED")
Feathered Arrow
has, to me, always been the Red Arrows' representation of a Hawk
aircraft. One of the longer-standing shapes that the Reds
fly, it's a variation on Diamond
Nine
with Reds 8 and 9 dropping back behind number 7.
This
formation is compact enough to roll, and is generally seen in loops and
bends. In recent years, it's also been quarter-clovered:
after
pulling up into the vertical, the front five aircraft - Enid, and the
rear four - Gypo - turn away from each other and complete the loop in
opposite directions, before crossing at the bottom.
