FLANKER

Named after the Soviet air-defence fighter, the Flanker formation has only made one appearance so far, in 2001.  Compared to Typhoon, which in the early 1990s was called Flanker, this formation is a far better resemblance to the Soviet Su-27 Flanker, with its long nose represented by Reds 1 and 6; comparatively straight wings shown by Reds 2-5, and two large engines represented by Reds 8 and 9, which trailed smoke during the Flanker bend.

An innovative line-abreast formation, Flanker bears some resemblance to Angel, a formation seen in The Red Arrows' 2000 display.
