Big Vixen formation

Introduced in the Red Arrows' 25th display season, Big Vixen is one of the widest formations that the Red Arrows fly, and since its introduction, frequently appears in the team's display.  Although it could be seen as Triangle-with-one-missing, the team introduced it and named it as a larger version of their regularly-flown Vixen formation.

Big Vixen is one of the few formations where Reds 6 and 7 are not directly behind Red 1, and observing how the team carry out a formation change into Big Vixen is always interesting, as the Synchro pair must move asymmetrically to complete the change (Red 6 must move backwards and sideways, while Red 7 needs only nudge sideways).  Because Red 1 is the only team member on the centre line in this formation, Big Vixen makes an excellent formation for rolling, with all the other members of the team having to carry out an off-axis roll.

The main point to watch during such a roll is how flat the formation stays.  During practices, the formation will often tend to flex and bend, but during the display season, all nine aircraft stay in one flat plane throughout the entire roll.
