Pectoral Sandpiper Ogston 14/07/2005

On 14th July Jon Lowes found a small wader hiding in rocks in front of the hide. As the water at Ogston is quite low the bird was quite distant down close to the waters edge. Unfortunately here the bank slopes away quite steeply and the bird was only partly visible. After a while it came out briefly and Jon was able to identify it as a Pectoral Sandpiper.

I arrived just before 4pm and although at first it remained hidden in the rocks, it eventually came out and showed quite well, if distantly from the hide, and I was able to get the record shots here.

This was the second Pectoral Sandpiper for Ogston and about the 16th for Derbyshire. It was either a fairly worn adult, or perhaps more likely a first-summer bird.

Also there the Little Egret pictured below, and the adult Yellow-legged Gull were still present. The Pectoral Sandpiper remained until the following day (15th).

After missing the juvenile here in September 2003, I for one was very pleased to see this bird. Thanks again to Jon for finding the bird.
